Ina Irene Schrader

June 2, 1919 - March 5, 2013

SALEM - Ina Irene (Nashum) Schrader was born June 2, 1919 in Madison, South Dakota and died peacefully in her sleep on March 5th in Salem.

She is preceded in death by Her daughter Sharyn McAllister; Her infant son, Charles, Her grandsons, Jeff McDonald, Jonathan McDonald, Zachary Guy and Connor Guy; former husband, Leon Schrader, son-in-law Sam Freshner, and her longtime loving companion Orvall Tucker.

Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn Cornie (Bob) of Beaverton; Dorene Freshner of Keizer; Heidi Guy (Greg) of Dallas, Oregon, and her one sibling, sister Veryl Fitch of Dallas, Oregon. Also 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren, a niece and two nephews.

Ina and her sister grew up in Madison, South Dakota where Ina was both a jump-rope and a spelling champion, never losing. When she and Leon divorced, she moved with three young daughters to Salem, Oregon, where she had previously visited her oldest daughter. Being enthralled with the fresh fruit, blossoms and greenness and opportunities, she made a fresh start in Oregon in 1955. They traveled in a non-air conditioned 1949 green Mercury Coupe across the Rockies and Cascades to Salem. She was true pioneer and a very brave one at that. No home or job or friends to greet them but that soon changed and she worked some hard jobs to provide for her daughters a very good life and for her freezer full of ice cream… right up to her death. She enjoyed sewing, puzzles, home decorating, especially with owls, garage sales and reading.

Ina loved ballroom dancing all her life and she and Orvall attended dances for several decades… The Eagles and Senior Centers… often twice a week. They had many costumes they loved to wear to the special event dances. Ina always wore earrings and more recently, scarves.

Ina also loved Lawrence Welk and his music and watched his TV shows until they were no longer being aired. She delighted in telling the story about when Lawrence Welk visited the other half of the home in which she lived and she could "hear his voice"…

Mr. Welk was a small-time band leader in South Dakota then and played at several of the places she danced.

The family wishes to express our thanks to the Staff of Cedar Village Assisted Living and to Willamette Valley Hospice, all of whom were special, caring friends to Ina and to her family.

Visitation will be from 2-8p.m. Friday, March 8th, at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service with a graveside service 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 9th, at Belcrest Memorial Park.

Ina lived for several years as a member of our community at Rainbow Gardens Mobile Village. It was a sad day when she said she needed to move to have more assistance in her living situation, and another sad day to learn of her passing. We were blessed to have her with us for all of those years.
