Ira had the wisdom of Solomon, the sensitivity of Freud, and the serenity of Ghandi. How fortunate I am to have known him.

Hello, I was the "Cardiac Graphics" Secretary from roughly 1977-1979. I processed the pre-op reports from the gigantic computer! I was a bit lost in those days, having just lost my mother and dropped out of college. Dr. Bernstein's kindness, patience, and humor will be forever in my memory. He was such a brilliant gentleman. I am so sorry for your loss...what a great human being! Madonna Dowd Piper

We were unaware of Ira's death until now. Both Alex and I owe Ira so much. Without his persistence and caring, both of us wouldn''t have gotten to the right doctors and diagnosis for our cancers. We owe him a debt of gratitude and will remember him always. Ira will be missed
Our sincerest sympathy

Almost 40 years ago, my uncle suffered a heart attack while visiting me in Evanston. Dr. Bernstein was his assigned cardiologist at Evanston Hospital and when he discovered that my uncle did not have health insurance, he waived his fee. Amazing. I've never forgotten this, and remembering it now restores my faith in humanity.

Three months after my brother died, I met Ira as a medical student at Cook County Hospital. I later became his intern. After those marvelous years, with whom can I now relish those experiences we had together? For the next 56 years our loves, and our families became tightly interwoven. One cannot die who lives within the lives of others. I will miss him.

I was a patient of Dr. Bernstein from 1981 until he retired. He was also my parents´ doctor for the last 4 years of their lives in the early 80´s. He was a kind, compassionate, caring doctor, and so supportive of me with my parents. He also had a great sense of humor. We felt so fortunate to be his patients. We were not just his patients. We were his friends. I am so sorry to learn of his death. My deepest sympathy to his entire family.

Ira was blessed in his own words with a wonderful life. I was fortunate to have him as a friend for 50 years and life time mentor. And in the end he taught me once again how to face adversity with courage, dignity and grace. Renee and I will greatly miss him.

Ira was a resident in Internal Medicine at
County Hospital; we interns knew he was a Winner. When I had a cardiac
adventure years later he treated me
at Evanston Hospital ICU;
each morning he visited me with a
kiss and encouragement .
He lifted my spirit and heart as he did
all about him.
