Irene Caris Obituary

NEW COLUMBIA — Irene S. Caris, 95, of Center Street, formerly of Watsontown, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at Kramm Health and Rehabilitation Center, Watsontown where she had resided the past month.
Born April 9, 1912, in Enola, she was the eldest child of Calvin S. and Emma (Rothfuss) Smith. On Sept. 1, 1930, she married Harry R. Caris, and they celebrated 46 years of marriage until his death Feb. 14, 1976.
A 1930 graduate of Milton High School, Irene retired from Myco Industries, Montgomery where she had been a seamstress for many years.
She was an active member of the New Columbia Senior Center until recently, and was a member of United in Christ Lutheran Church, West Milton.
Irene loved traveling and had traveled overseas twice and visited all but one state.
She enjoyed crocheting and had crocheted many blankets for the Lioness program. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially at the Senior Center, but her most favorite pastime was spending time with her family.
Surviving are one daughter, Marlene “Dolly” Bittner of New Columbia; one son and daughter-in-law, K. Delroy and Linda Caris of Watsontown; eight grandchildren, Mark and Tim Bittner of Lewisburg; Candice Pick of New Columbia, Penny Gabel of Milton RD, Anthony Caris of Milton, Roger Caris in Calif., Colleen Caris of Lewisburg and Kevin Caris of Aston; 15 great -grandchildren; five stepgreat grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; one brother and sister-inlaw, Paul and Grace Smith of Lewisburg; and two sisters, Blanche Felmey of Wilmington, Del. and Helen Kuykendall of Milton.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, was one son, Leonard L. Caris, who died in December 2006; two grandsons, Scot and Michael Caris; three sisters, Viola Rank, Edna Smith and Hannah Rissel; and three brothers, Floyd, Howard, and Robert Smith.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at United in Christ Lutheran Church, 1875 Churches Road, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Catrina L. Ciccone, her pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, New Columbia.
Friends and relatives are invited to call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her memory be made to either United in Christ Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 95, West Milton, PA 17886, or the New Columbia Senior Center, 859 Datesman Village, West Milton, PA 17886.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brooks Funeral Home, 124 Main Street, Watsontown.
