IRENE SINGER SPECTOR

SPECTOR IRENE SINGER SPECTOR (Age 94) Passed away unexpectedly July 1, 2016 at age 94. Born November 9, 1921 in New York City, Irene graduated from Hunter College at the age of 19. In 1942 she moved to Washington, DC where she met her future husband and worked for the Australian War Supplies Procurement Department. Following the war Irene worked at the University of Maryland Engineering Department. After beginning her family, Irene earned her teacher''s certification and began 25 years of teaching. She taught foreign languages at Northwood and Peary High Schools and served as president of the Maryland Modern Language Association in the 1960''s. After retirement Irene volunteered for the Washington Ear, Brookside Gardens and the Montgomery County Stroke Association and was named "Montgomery County Serves" Volunteer of the Year in 2008. She also enjoyed a second career as Peppi the Clown, giving her time and talent at schools, hospitals and libraries. Preceded in death by her beloved husband Sidney; grandson, Eric Spector; sister, Jeanne Axelrod and brother Les Singer. She is survived by her loving children, Ellen (Mitchell) Goldfarb, David (Carmen) Spector, Diana (Ron) Sageser and Julie Spector. She is also mourned by her cherished grandchildren, Matthew (Jennifer), Tracy (Holly), David, Amanda, Rachel; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Joshua, and Joseph; many much loved nieces, nephews and dear friends. Her indomitable spirit inspired many and she will be greatly missed. Funeral services are at 12 Noon on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Mishkan Torah Synagogue, 10 Ridge Road, Greenbelt, MD followed by internment at 3 p.m., at King David Memorial Gardens, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA. Shiva location will be announced at funeral service.
