Iris A. Notto

October 21, 1939 - September 12, 2024

Iris Notto, 84, known for her kind, loving and humorous personality, passed away peacefully at her home, with family and a friend at her side, on September 12, 2024, after her courageous 15 month battle with cancer.

Born on October 21, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois to Magdalen Yaciw and Woodrow Massimino in Chicago, Iris was the third of their four daughters. She was raised in River Forest and Oak Park, Illinois where she received her education.

Iris enjoyed a full, creative life: a passion for cooking, going to plays with her "Balcony Ladies", water aerobics with her "Mermaids, and traveling the world with her husband Don. They travelled to Europe, China, Africa, Egypt, Israel and Greece and her favorite: Paris, France. They also loved taking road trips on their custom Harley's. Oh, the stories she told. Iris was a "Red Hatter", where she made lifelong friends. She enjoyed taking classes at The Clearing Folk School with her sister Judy. Her classes included quilting, woodworking, and her most challenging, the art of blacksmithing. Iris was a card maker, delighting family and friends with her creativity. She was an excellent quilter and donated quilts to the Linus Project and the French Camp.

In 1980 Iris married the love of her life Donald Notto and they enjoyed a blissful unconditional love for 44 years. She was a devoted mother to her daughter Irisann Malato and her stepson Steve Notto. She doted on her two grandsons Taylor Green of Orlando, Florida and Alex Notto of St. Charles, Illinois. Iris rescued a little black dog and restored him to good health with a lot of TLC. They named him Otto. He was her constant companion for the last 6 years.

At age 53 . Iris followed her dream and became a Nurse. She worked nights as an Oncology Nurse for 10 years before retiring. She was a comfort to those suffering from cancer.

Iris was a devout Christian. She was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Iris was preceded in death by her parents, her son Philip Malato, her grandson Austin Green , and her sisters, Barbara Moore and Rosemary Gray.

Iris is survived by her husband Don, her daughter Irisann Malato, stepson Stephen Notto, her sister Judith Biggus, her half sister Maryann Grube, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Iris's life will take place at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at 1624 E. Euclid Ave. Mt. Prospect. The visitation is scheduled from 10:00 - 11:00AM,

I´ve only known Iris for a few years but she immediately instigated we were best friends. Despite a 32 year age difference we bonded over our love of romance novels and the hunky men on the covers. Whenever I saw or talked to her she made me feel like no one else existed and I´m sure I´m not the only person who felt that way. She was a mischievous little ball of energy and love! I will so miss you!
