IRMA KAPLAN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 31, 2018.
Irma Weiner Kaplan Hospital, school and office nurse, reader and grateful patron of Springfield library On January 28 our mother, nana, great-nana, sister, aunt, cousin and friend Irma Weiner Kaplan passed away. She is survived by many relatives who will miss her dearly, including her children, Gail Schwartz, Benjamin and Barbara Kaplan, and Donna and Sandy McAdams, and their children, Alyssa and Tyler O'Connell, Abby Schwartz, Rachel and Byron Stapleton (and children Ethan and Olivia), Emma Kaplan, Molly McAdams, and Rebecca and Zac Kirkpatrick (and daughter Annie). As a young nurse, Irma was in the Cadet Corps, and began her career at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. She went on to work in the Springfield schools, and then with her husband, Dr. Elliot Kaplan. An education advocate, Irma went back to school and earned her bachelor and master's degrees in nursing. Irma was an avid reader and lifelong patron of the Springfield Public Library. In retirement, she enjoyed her book club, mahjong group and community college classes. Irma volunteered at hospice and served on the board of The Hearing Society, two organizations close to her heart. Irma loved the theater, dark chocolate and cocktail parties with family and friends. A graveside service will take place Feb. 2, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin, N.J. Following the service, and in lieu of Shiva, Irma's children invite family and friends to celebrate her life at Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael in Springfield, N.J. Memorial donations may be made to the Springfield Public Library or The Hearing Society, c/o Alice Knecht, 31 Redspire Drive, Union, N.J. 07083.

The Gutkin family is so sorry for your loss. Irma was our next door neighbor for the past 14 years. She was an inspiration to all of us. Her love for life and her energy she maintained on a daily basis was just incredible. We loved having her over for a glass of wine and relaxing on our deck. Irma was extremely fond of our dog Oliver- and always made sure she had a bag of carrots in her refrigerator any time he came to visit.
We will truly miss seeing her each day- we feel blessed to have had the time we did with her. She was a special lady and will always hold a special place in all of our hearts.
