I grew up across the street from Bruskin's Hardware store. My sisters and I are about the same age as Irv and his sister & brother. I remember when Harry ran the store and when Harry retired and moved to Florida. Then when Irv took over running the store I remember all of the different German Shepherd dogs that Irv had over the years. Mr. Scope was the first and Irv had trained Mr. Scope to sit and Irv would put two or three milk bones on Mr. Scope's nose and Mr. Scope wouldn't move until Irv give him the command. Mr. Scope would toss the milk bones in the air and catch all of them. This is just one of the memories I have of Bruskin's Hardware and Irv.

I knew Irv and Stella Bruskin...from the old neighborhood. Stella and I were good friends. She often relaid stories about her family. Since Stella and Irv were twins, many memories were shared. God Bless You Both! Reunited again.

Growing up with an uncle like Irv Bruskin, it's easy for a kid to think that this character and world that surrounded him were normal. But as I grew up a bit, I began to understand that this man operated in his own very unique universe.Irv was a real treasure ! The kind of man that the most esteemed actors could observe as a "character-study." He was the real deal. His iconic hardware shop "Bruskin's Hardware" always felt like it was about 1,000 years old. And beyond all the keys and trash, there was a very profound character filled with the most entertaining stories. And the most incredible voice."What's up KID?"
I once describedIrv as the "Willy Wonka of keys! "And it might be the truestthingI've ever said.

As a kid, my sisterand I actually came up with a song and dance about Irv.It was called "Irving"And it was probably the best performance we ever created. We had a stage name for it - we called ourselves "The Sparks"and literally up until a few weeks ago Irv asked me, "how are the Sparks doing?" He never forgot!
Here are some things I think of when I think of Irv:

Spit gagsHis voiceHardware 1Hardware 2 (because... why not?)His laughHis tie with keys on it (because, as he said, it's "apropos")Smuggling pepper spray to me (because I could never get it in NYC)Baseball gamesHis dad Harry (also a legendary character)Suspenders
I am also really grateful that, over the past 6 months, I actually got a chance to reconnectwith Irv over Facetime. We chatted and laughed and bonded about pure breddogs and the American Kennel Club. He loved German Shepards, and he shared puppy storieswith me.

I will miss him alot.
He will be missed by many. And will definitely be remembered and celebrated in the years to come!

Irv was one of my first role models. Although he could have done many things with his life after he left Temple Univ., he decided to continue in the family business. He mentored many including me. He told me to do what makes you happy. And because he did, today I am happy. I would often call him with jokes after some world event and ask him if it was too soon and he would say it was never too early for a good joke, RIP my friend

Hanging out at the store was always a Blast. There was always something to learn and hear about. It was better then any social media site. The history there would fill volumes, and those pictures !!! is like a who's-who of Philly and documentary material.

I can't say for sure when I first met Irv, but I guess I knew him all of my life and will continue to remember him for the rest of my life. Many people knew Irv as the key master, and he truly was a master of his craft, and a pillar of the South Philly community he served. In the world of big box stores, Irv offered an escape where one could receive honest, professional, friendly, and personalized service and advice all while offering quality products at a reasonable price. However, I will remember Irv more so for the good times and the laughter that we shared at the store, for his generosity (especially around the holidays), and for his wisdom and words of encouragement which have in many ways lead me down the path that I am on today. My only regret is that I never
shared with Irv how much of an impact he really had on my life. I hope he knew.

Thank you Irv - for everything. Rest in peace my friend.
