Ivan Pearley "Wimpy" Rogers
1930 - 2017
AUGUSTA - Ivan Pearley "Wimpy" Rogers, 87, passed peacefully at his home on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, following several recent hospital admissions.
He was born in Moscow, Maine, on July 1, 1930, and raised in Bingham, by his grandparents.
He married Patricia Tillson, on July 6, 1953, and they raised one son, Kelly, in Augusta.
In 1951, he joined the Army, and served in Korea. He would later receive the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, along with several other medals. Following the war, he would work for Merrill Transport for 39 years, driving around the county, and into Daaquam, Canada; retiring in the 1990s, only to return to work for NexCycle, and retiring again, at the age of 80. Ivan and his wife, Patricia, wintered in New Port Richey, Fla., until he was not able to travel due to his health.
He was a longtime member of Winter Street Baptist Church, and would later participate in the Christmas Choir, known as Delta Heart. He enjoyed being outside most with his granddog Cosmo, and sailing with his longtime friend, Ernie Hopkins.
Ivan was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Ines Edgecomb; and one son, Terry Patrick.
Ivan is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia Rogers; his son Kelly Rogers and wife Shari; two grandchildren, Matthew Rogers and wife Catalina, of North Carolina; and Dylan Rogers; three great-grandchildren, Victor, Alejandra and Solona Rogers; and a brother, Irving Rogers and wife Blanche, of Augusta.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Jim Blanck, of Hospice, and the care aides who were so gentle and loving, Karla, and Julie.
There will be a visitation gathering at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street, Augusta, on Wednesday, Dec. 6, from 5-7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Winter Street Baptist Church in Gardiner, on Thursday, Dec. 7, at 10 a.m., followed by a military burial at 1:30 p.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery, in Augusta. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church St., Augusta, where condolences, memories, photos and videos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the website at: www.khrfuneralhomes.com.
