and educated at Bramley
Vale and Rotherham Road
(Anthony Bek) schools, Mr
Slater had been a local resident
for most of his life.
At the age of 15 he began
work on a local farm, joining
the Sherwood Foresters
in 1956 and serving in North
Africa (Tripoli), Malaya, Singapore,
Canada, Cyprus, Germany and Northern Ireland.
After leaving the Army in 1965 he went into butchering,
working for Pleasley Co-op, Hutchinson's, Mansfield, and
Riley's, Farnsfield. In 1975 he went to work for British Petroleum
at Eakring, where he worked for 17 years until
leaving in 1992. He then did part-time work until becoming
ill in 2001.
His interests included solving crosswords, growing his
favourite Tamina tomatoes and fuchsias, watching Carry
On films and playing his collection of classical music.
Mr Slater, who died at King's Mill Hospital, Sutton, after
a long illness, leaves his wife, Mrs Margaret Slater, son
Christopher, daughter-in-law Jodie and his granddaughter,
Rhia.

The service was conducted by the Rev F. Beech, and arrangements
