In memory of
Kay Bunting Randolph
April 11, 2005
Dr. Teabeaut and I became good friends through our work together to bring to fruition his vision of an Iris Fountain as the centerpiece of the Doris Duke Center for Sarah P. Duke Gardens, at Duke University. His wish goal was to honor Dr. Frederic Hanes, his mentor during his early years as a physician. It was a joy to know him, and we too have quite a few "Teabeaut" stories by which to remember a wonderfully talented, caring, amusing and generous Duke alumnus. His memory will live on in our hearts, and in the beauty he enabled to be created within Duke Gardens.

I met Dr. Teabeaut while he served on our Brain Tumor Board of Advisors here at Duke. He had the sweetest smile and a darling sense of humor. I loved hearing all the stories and the history he had stored. I will truly miss this dear man.

To me Dr. Bob was a family hero. Driving forward in the field of medicine at a time when so many young men were forced to forget their careers and service their country. Dr. Bob accomplish both.
Last week I phoned him and learned that he, was a boy, spent a number of summers with my mother while my father worked with the CCC in western North Carolina. Mom and Dad never mentioned this support, but in reflection, I understand their fondness for my older cousin

I worked for Dr. Teabeaut many years ago at the Medical College of Georgia but, I guess what I remember the most was when I worked with the medical students. He was respected for his knowledge and was voted "Teacher of the Year" by his students. It was commented many times that his class gave them the edge they needed when interviewing for residency. His knowledge has been missed since his retirement but his memory will live on in many.

Dr. Teabeaut was a friend and benefactor to many. Those of us who were lucky enough to share his friendship, and to be exposed to his personality, his wit, and his ideas have benefited greatly. While his physical presence will be missed, his memory lives on.

We will miss Bob at our annual McLeod reunions near Carthage, NC. I enjoyed hearing him talk about family matters and marveled at his energy and cheerful outlook.
