Jack Betts, a journeyman actor who was in countless soaps, superhero flicks, and westerns, including the 2002 "Spider-Man" film, died June 19, 2025, at the age of 96 at his home in Los Osos, California.
With a career spanning seven different decades, Betts was one of those actors a viewer couldn't help but encounter. After his 1959 screen debt, he had a run of westerns and police dramas in the 1960s, including appearances on "Gunsmoke" and "Perry Mason," before acting in a string of spaghetti westerns in the 1970s. As the 1980s dawned, Betts became a fixture on TV dramas and soaps, with small roles in shows like "All My Children," "Falcon Crest," "One Life to Live," and countless more. The '90s saw him showing up in superhero movies like "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin," capped off by his work in "Spider-Man," in which his character ousted Norman Osborn from the board at Oscorp. Throw in his many sitcom appearances ("Seinfeld," "Frasier," and more), and he was an actor viewers saw more than they realized.
"Rest in peace Jack Betts. Marvel fans remember you as the man who told Norman Osborn he was out. But DC fans and myself remember you best as the high roller from Batman and Robin," fan Jordan Eshelman said on the social media platform X, while fellow fan Joe Wawrzyniak noted: "Great character guy in tons of stuff. Very memorable as the... golf guy who has a heart attack in Falling Down."
