Jack Blair Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 26, 2024.
Jack Dwayne Blair, age 88, peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family on August 5, 2024 in Claremont, California. Born on March 21, 1936, in Astoria, Oregon, to parents Ralph and Anna Blair, later moving to California where he married Pamela, his one true love and together, they raised their family.

Jack graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario, CA, and upon graduation, served in the U.S. Army for two years, where he honed his discipline and leadership skills, which would later define his career in law enforcement. Jack dedicated his life to public service and community.

In July, 1960, Jack began his distinguished 30-year career with the Pomona Police Department, advancing through the ranks while working in multiple divisions along the way. Jack's dedication to furthering his education while serving the community was evident as he obtained his Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of La Verne, while rising to the rank of Captain, and eventually retiring as Acting Chief of Police in 1990. Jack also dedicated many years to the Salvation Army amongst other community organizations during his time of tenure with the Pomona Police Department. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed working as the Director of Security for the L.A. County Fairplex for a few years until he was later offered a position as the Director of Security and Safety at the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for an additional 17 years. Jack continued to share his expertise with his law enforcement background while serving on the City of Claremont Traffic and Transportation Committee as the Commissioner from 2016 until his recent resignation in October 2023.

Beyond his professional life, Jack was an avid outdoorsman. He traveled the world extensively, and his passion for cycling and hiking kept him active throughout his life. He ran 15 of the L.A. Marathon races, finishing his final race well into his 70's.

Jack is survived by his sons, Terry Blair and Dwayne Blair, along with 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Anna Blair, his brother, Ralph Blair Jr., and the love of his life and mother of his children, Pamela T. Blair.

A memorial service will be held at Todd Memorial Chapel, 570 N. Garey Ave. Pomona, CA, on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. The service will be followed by a Celebration of Life Luncheon at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Pilgrim Hall, located directly across the street from the Chapel. Friends, family, and community members are invited to join in celebrating Jack's remarkable life and legacy.

How do you say goodbye to someone you weren't finished with yet? I could never get enough of you and your wisdom and your kindness and your voice which gave me a sense of calmness. You were the 2nd person I called when I found out I was going to be a Grandma - my mother being the 1st. I am a better person because of knowing you and the family you created. And for that I am eternally grateful. Goodbye to my forever Father-In-Law. I love you and my life will never be the same without you in it.

I first met Jack in an aqua fitness class at the Claremont Club. Laura Monson, both the instructor and my daughter really respected Jack. Later, after meeting Deno Vaccher at a family wedding I learned Jack was the BEST Friend...from Paper Boy days. As best friends do they kept the friendship throughout their lives. Their wives Marlene and Pam shared their enthusiasm for life and their love of God. Both Deno and Jack lost their wives their 60's and both lived well into their 80's.
In 2003 Deno and I married with Jack Blair as Best man. It seemed time to travel... Bev Heiberg, a chief Purser for United Airlines was a friend thru our years of working together. Bev was very active in her Church choir, she loved to travel, she was full of life and a great fit for Jack. The four of us began traveling , first to Europe where we drove thru Germany, Jack was our driver, of course. Into Italy, Lake Como, into beloved Bannia and Deno's inviting Italian relatives. Our second adventure was to VietNam. Bev was a great travel overseer. All four of us had seen our classmates leave home and give their lives. It was a deeply moving diverse trip. We witnessed the French influence, the great devotion to family, a bicycle as vehicle for husband ,wife, child and chicken in the cage.
Our next trip was the Black Sea Cruise. Socci Russia was to become location for the Olympics in 200 days. Romania,Bulgaria, Turkey, Beverly spearheaded our adventure and we were upgraded to Balcony rooms, with bathtubs in our suites....Living as royalty, and Jack and Deno were having and living in the style they deserved.
Bev and Jack traveled Europe with his Granddaughter. What a trip and a blessing to travel together and show her this part of the world.
Life went on. Jack and Beverly spent time at her place in the dessert, her Home in Huntington Beach, and in Claremont they were blessed to attend church together.
I am grateful for the Highschool reunions I attended with Deno and Jack. Jack kept his memory and his love for his friends....
So grateful to know this man who blessed the lives of so many. Deno had his three surgeries, Hip, knee and heart surgery at Pomona Valley because he knew Jack was nearby...would oversee his outcome...Jack engendered trust, faith, friendship...All that was Good, Lovely if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, Jack was standing to promote and defend.
Thank you God for Deno's Best Friend. Thank you God for Jack's life lived giving excellent Honor and Glory to you, Our Provider, Our Sustainer, Our very Help in all we do.
God blessed us with you, Jack Blair!

I worked with Jack during his stint as the Safety Officer at the hospital and he was just a great person. He had a sense of humor that I will always remember and cherish the times we worked together.
