Jack was a True Pioneer, a Great Mentor and a Real Mensch. He thought me graduate level Computational Neuroscience when I was one of the youngest undergraduate students. He did not lord over his students and enjoyed being challenged by them. Before I left for graduate school, I stopped by his office to thank him for his lectures and told him they had motivated me to sink my teeth into the field. His humility was so great that he seemed surprised that he had played that role. I also saw him when he would visit my graduate lab at the Salk Institute, and ever the gentleman, he would thank me for "taking such good care of me". May His Brilliant Star Illuminate the Horizon of All Those who were Blessed to Marvel at the Universe with Him.

Dear Jillian and family,

We are very sorry for your loss.
I, Wim, had the pleasure and honor to work with Jack over the past decades.
He was a wonderful friend, scientist, and collaborator. While he will be missed, his significant influence will endure because many students and postdocs were mentored and educated by Jack. The attached picture shows how he enjoyed teaching and interacting with his students.

Sending our deepest condolences, Wim and Ingrid van Drongelen

Thanks to Jack for early career mentoring when we both visited Los Alamos, including wisdom and culture in neural networks, biological modeling, and statistical physics.
