Jack lived two doors up the street from me. We were buddies up through junior high school. We would often run the three miles home from school and save the dime that it would have cost to ride the bus. One joint project we were got involved in was to string a wire from my house to Jacks and put a telegraph machine in each of our homes. We both learned morse code and tried to send messages to each other. This was when we learned about line drop. The voltage was so low after it traveled two lots up the street that we had to get larger batteries to try and power the signal. It never worked very well and the batteries were expensive, but we learned a lot. Jack got a telescope for a present so we learned about the stars for a while. That may have been about when the Russians shot up Sputnik. We put up a tent in the back yard and played with the telescope for hours. We lost contact with each other but, the memories have not been lost. I am sorry that we lost Jack, but the memories are more valuable than ever to me now.
