Jack G. Hughes, 83

Jack G. Hughes, 83, a long time resident of Monon, passed away at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2015 in IU Health White Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 29, 1931 in White County to the late Teddie M. and Anna G. (Thompson) Hughes and was a 1949 graduate of Buffalo High School. He was a graduate of Mass Marketing Management from Michigan State University in 1955.

Jack joined the United States Army in 1949 where he served in the 293 Infantry 38th Division as 2nd Lieutenant and was honorably discharged in October, 1965.

His marriage of 60 years was to I. Sue Marion on May 16, 1954 at the Buffalo Church of the Brethren; she survives.

Mr. Hughes was a grocery store manager for many years for several major chains including National Tea / Standard Food Stores, MARSH and IGA. He also worked for the L. M. Berry Company selling Yellow Book advertising for several years. Jack and Sue bought the Monon News in 1973 and operated it and a successful commercial printing business for 37 years until selling it in 2007. In retirement, Jack helped as a greeter at the Clapper Family Funeral Home in Monon for several years.

Mr. Hughes was a proud member of the Buffalo Church of the Brethren, the Monticello Masonic Lodge, and the Monon Lions Club. He was a White County Councilman for 16 years and on the Monon Town Board for 4 years.

Jack loved camping and traveling, his church and his morning cup of coffee with his friends. He enjoyed spending time in conversation and was always ready with a story or quick joke. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving with his wife Sue are two daughters, Deborah Karns (husband: Paul) of Battle Ground and Pamela Hughes (very special friend: Michael Allton) of Monon; a grandson, Timothy Karns (wife: Allison) of Carmel, IN and a great-granddaughter, Victoria. Also surviving are his siblings, Wilma Sheroan of Monticello, Ted "Byron" Hughes (wife: Pat) of Logansport, Barbara Reagan of Lancaster, CA, Marilyn Waldrop (husband: George) of Phoenix, AZ and Sharon Miller of Elkhart.

Preceding him in death with his parents are his siblings, Burnita Hughes, Marlene King, Joe Hughes and an infant brother.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Clapper Family Funeral Home; Pastor Howard "Butch" Wildermuth to officiate.

Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Church of the Brethren.
