Jack Pendleton Maddex

Mr. Jack Pendleton Maddex, 95, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2009.

He was born on July 26, 1914, to Alice Louise Leathers and William Winn Maddex and was raised in the Belmont section of Charlottesville. On November 25, 1939, in Blackstone, he married Jacqueline Epes Crinkley, his devoted wife of 70 years.

He attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 1936 from the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy where he was a member of Rho Chi. Jack then worked eight years at Kearfott's Drug Store in Martinsville before moving to Orange in 1944 to become a partner with Stan Jewell in Grymes Drug Store. During his more than 30 years at Grymes he served as a mentor for many young people who worked in the store. He was dedicated to his profession and served it well for over 50 years.

Jack was active in his community and church. He was Past Master of Piedmont Lodge No. 152, A.F. and A.andM, in Martinsville, of which he was member from 1938 until his death. He made his home in Orange for 44 years, where he served as elder and deacon in the Orange Presbyterian Church. He was president of the Orange Rotary Club and longtime director of the National Bank of Orange. He and other local businessmen developed Greenfields, on Rapidan Road, as a residential area. Jack moved to the Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg in 1988 and devoted much effort to the growth and beauty of its gardens. He became an active member of First Presbyterian Church and volunteered at the Massanetta Springs Camp and Conference Center.

Jack enjoyed golf, travel, and square-dancing, but his foremost hobby was gardening. Countless acquaintances enjoyed the abundant yield of his gardens (as well as his holiday peanut brittle). However, his gift for cultivation was exceeded by his nurturing love of his neighbors. His loving family and friends were touched and continue to be inspired by his gentle demeanor, compassionate character, and generosity towards others.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Maddex Bennett; two brothers, J. Landon and William "Bill"; a grandson, William Ira Maddex; and a nephew, Richmond Crinkley.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Jack P. Maddex Sr. and his wife, Ellen, of Eugene, Oregon; a daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Barnes and her husband, Donald, of Greenville, North Carolina; a sister, Marguerite Nunley and her husband, Wallace, of Clifton Forge; his grandson's wife, Jennifer Moran of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren, Reisa Maddex and her husband, Patrick Neve, of Eugene, Oregon, Robert Barnes and his wife, Jessica, of Auburn, Alabama, and Sarah Adams and her husband, Todd, of Greenville, North Carolina; eight great-grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009, at the Sunnyside Community Meredith Chapel in Harrisonburg. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Graham Cemetery in Orange.

Preddy Funeral of Orange is in charge of arrangements.
