Jack Nichols Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2024.
Jack Patrick Nichols, a man driven by hard work and a spirit of adventure, embarked on his final journey on August 12, 2024, at the age of 75.

Born in Medford, Oregon, on January 8, 1949 to Jack Wesley and Dorothy Mae Nichols, Jack-known to many as "Pat"-lived a life that embraced the thrill of the unknown. From an early age, he refused to be bound by convention. As a teenager, Pat and a couple of friends decided to hitchhike across the United States, a bold adventure that led them to unexpected opportunities. They eventually secured jobs on a Danish freighter, which carried them to Spain, England, and the Canary Islands. While in the Canary Islands, Pat found himself swept up in the excitement of helping a director film a movie about surfing-a moment that would forever mark his passion for pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons.

In 1983, Pat settled in Reno, Nevada, where he channeled his relentless energy into founding JP Nichols Construction. Over the years, he acquired land and meticulously built homes and apartments, each project a reflection of his commitment to craftsmanship and creating something lasting. Pat took immense pride in the structures he brought to life, and he treated his many tenants over the years with the same care and dedication.

In 1985, Pat married Joan, the love of his life. Their years together were filled with mutual respect and deep connection, though their time was cut short when Joan passed away in 2003, after Pat cared for her through a prolonged battle with cancer. Despite the loss, Pat continued to carry her memory with him, naming one of his apartment buildings in her honor.

Pat's zest for life and unyielding sense of adventure lives on through his sister, Niki Brown, his brother-in-law, Blake Brown, and his two beloved nephews, Andy and Matt Brown. To them, he was more than just a brother and an uncle; he exemplified adventure, resilience, hard work, and a refusal to settle for the ordinary. He was an avid surfer and skateboarder, even into his later adult years.

In his later years, he spent much of his free time caring for his aging mother. The two could often be seen zipping around together in his porsche; perhaps a throwback to when his father Jack, who was a paratrooper in WWII, used to entertain them with flights in single-engine planes across the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Funeral services for Mr. Nichols will be at Noon (12 p.m.) on Friday, September 6, 2024, at Sierra Memorial Gardens Cemetery, located at Lemmon Drive & Hwy. 395, exit 74 in Reno, Nevada. The family welcomes those who wish to join them in honoring his memory.

Hello to all of you who are on this page.
I am one of the people who had the pleasure of being part of your community.
I lived in your apartments at 611 Elko avenue in Reno.
I join in the prayers and wish the best for your family members.
I am at the same time trying to contact his relatives. If anyone knows of any children or next of kin it would be a great help.

thank you for your time

Uncle Pat will always be remembered as a hard-working, hands-on, larger than life kind of guy. Over the years, we shared many memories between Reno and Hidden Valley Lake, CA where we gathered for various celebrations, holidays, and family gatherings. Pat was part of the reason my husband and I actually first moved to Reno: he helped set us up with housing while in our early 20s. For a short time we lived on his property, then later in a few of his rental units. He cared about doing the right things, and I will always remember that he took such good care of his mother in her final years.

He and Joan moved on to Gear st when I was just a kid. He was more than just a neighbor. He was the cool guy with the skate ramp in is backyard, he is the guy who gave me odd jobs at work sites when I was a teenager.
He was more than just the guy across the street, he was my friend.
I still live across the street from Pat with my family. He was always out walking Archie , talking with everyone, helping my boys and I with broken mowers, bringing us bags of cherries.
He was more than just a staple in the neighborhood, he was a friend to everyone in the neighborhood.
I will miss the daily "wave" and "Hey Chris" in the cool, surfer, raspy Pat voice, but feel blessed to have had him in mine and my family´s life.

When Tom was still around me Tom and Pat built a lot together. Coming back from a job in Carlin one spring afternoon Pat and Tom were about 1/4 mile in front of me on I 80 near Valmy when a sudden gust of wind blew them off the road. Pats little white pickup was sitting on its wheels after rolling a couple times and with tools scattered everywhere. No injuries to them and NHP thought for sure they had to have been drunk. Of course we know how Pats drinking sent him to the hospital where he would meet Joanie and would bless his life.
