Jack I. Novick, 98, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, in
New Haven, Connecticut.
Born on April 21, 1927, in Belarus, Jack arrived in the US at 3 years old with his parents, Rabbi Boris and Sonia Novick, and he would go on to lead a life marked by service, scholarship, and deep devotion to family. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served honorably until the end of World War II, stationed at Navy Pier in Chicago.
Following his military service, Jack pursued higher education with determination and distinction. He earned his B.A. from City College in New York and later completed a Ph.D. in psychology at NYU. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a meaningful career dedicated to helping others.
Jack's professional life as a school psychologist brought him with his young family to Ossining New York in Westchester County, New York. His commitment to education and mental health led him to Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, where he trained future school psychologists. As Chair of Counseling and School Psychology, Jack played a pivotal role in shaping the department until his retirement in 1992. His work left a lasting impact on countless students and professionals in the field.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jack was known for his passion for culture, travel, art, music, food, wine and especially tennis. A lifelong enthusiast of the sport, he competed in numerous tournaments over the years. At age 85, he and his doubles partner Kenneth Sheldon were honored with an award and received a standing ovation at the Newport Tennis Center after winning the New England doubles tournament for their age group-a testament to his enduring athleticism and spirit.
Jack's greatest joy came from time spent with family sharing stories and meals filled with love and laughter. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Jane Novick; his first wife, Rabbi Leah Novick; their children David, Mindy, and Noah; and his grandchildren Hadas, Ayelet, Shoshana, Yonan, and Hanan; his sisters Eve Blatt and Stella Horowitz; his stepchildren Jeffrey Strauss and Sarah Strauss; step-grandchildren Sophie, Eli and Jacob, and 17 beloved great grandchildren. Jack was predeceased by his brother Aaron.
