Jack SETTERS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 4, 2004.
SETTERS _ Jack Jack Setters, Calgary Booster Club's 1972 Sportsman of the Year, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, in his home Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at the age of 81. He is the beloved husband of Joyce Setters, his wife of fifty-five years, and is also survived by two sons, Michael, and Jim and his wife Doris, as well as Joyce's family, cousins in England and their cats, Kelly and Koko. A sports enthusiast from his early years in Alix, Alberta, through high school in Red Deer and later the University of Alberta where he graduated with an engineering degree. Jack earned a name for himself as an athlete in hockey, football, track and golf. Jack also served with the Navy and Army in the Second World War. Jack worked for many years as a geophysicist with Hudson's Bay Oil and Gas, Dome and Amoco. He is a lifetime member of APEGGA. Jack was an active member of St. Mark's Anglican Church as Sunday School teacher and Cub leader. One of Jack's greatest loves was playing and teaching golf (juniors through seniors). He and Joyce were active members of Earl Grey Golf Club. In 1972, Jack was named Calgary Booster Club's Sportsman of the Year, a fitting honor to a man who dedicated himself to Calgary's Minor Hockey programs. He has a local arena named after him. Jack was an active member of the Glencoe Club and enjoyed bowling there with his wife and men's team. Jack and Joyce loved to travel to visit their sons and particularly Jim in Germany where he coaches the German Junior National Hockey Team. Memorial tributes in Jack's name may be made directly to the Calgary Booster Club Athletic Program. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark's Anglican Church (1802 - 33 Avenue S.W.) on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. John Gishler officiating. Interment to take place at a later date at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. To send condolences e-mail to: [email protected]. Arrangements entrusted to LEYDEN'S FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORIUM.
