Jack Westbye Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 31 to Apr. 6, 2022.
Jack D. Westbye passed away surrounded by his family on March 24, 2022 due to heart failure. He was born September 21, 1950 in Salt Lake City, UT to Ingrid and Arne Westbye. He grew up and spent most of his childhood in Norway with his family. If you knew Jack, he would love to tell stories about Norway and growing up there.
Jack was a proud military veteran, serving in the United States Navy from 1971 until honorably discharged in 1975. He served three tours in Vietnam aboard the USS Truxtun.
In 1976, he married his beloved wife, Pamela Westbye (Kalikakis) of 33 years and raised two children with her. Pam passed in 2009. Jack was extremely proud of his family and worked hard for them. He was very skilled in structural Steel work, welding, inspection and contributed to many major projects. Later in his career, he was involved in soil compaction and testing.
Jack enjoyed many activities from boating to camping; but nothing compared to his love of skiing. Many weekends would find Jack at any one of Utah's ski resorts (his favorite was Alta), where his style and skill would always stand out.
He is survived by his son, Nick; daughter, Melissa Westbye, grandchildren; Brothers, Tom and Steven Westbye; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wife, Pamela Westbye; parents, Ingrid and Arne Westbye; and brother, Dennis Westbye.
Jack and his family would like to give a special thanks to the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center, their heart clinic team, VA Housing Support and his wonderful hospice team at Caregiver Support Network.
Celebration of Life Memorial will be held Friday, April 8th from 6pm to 8pm at Neil O'Donnell Funeral Home located at 372 E. 100 S. Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local veteran's organization.

I served with Jack on Truxtun and found him to be an amazing man. I saw him leave the quarterdeck for the last time when he got out and even remember a skiing trip to Crystal Mountain with him and many others on Truxtun. I remember his advice as he was an avid skiier; "you'll be fine..." and I wasn't so sure being I was a novice level skier for sure. I'm so sad to know he has passed and though I could share some good stories from the berthing barge when we were in ship's overhaul, I'll forgo them here as they're just hilarious and not appropriate as a tribute. he was a quality soul and it was my pleasure to know him. Fair winds and following seas, Jack. R.I.P.

Sorry to heat about Jack. I'm an old Navy buddy (Cruiser). We had some good times back in the 70's. He was a force among us all. Love. Send me an email Nick and I'll send the full pic and I hope better quality.
