Jack WHITTEN Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jun. 3, 2017.
Jack Robert WHITTEN April 1, 1940 - May 19, 2017 It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Dad, Papa, Brother and Friend. Jack is predeceased by his brother Milt Whitten and Jack's son Christopher John Kim Whitten. Survived by Jack's wife Bonnie, daughter Lindsay (Richard), grandchildren; Richard Christopher, Jadyn and Noah, sister in-law Georgia Wagner, niece Tracy Attieh (Tom), children; Gabrielle, Owen, Lauren, Talia, niece Jennifer Peters (Cory), children; Devan, Drew, Cole, Caitlyn and Jacob. Brother Ed Whitten (Julie), sisters Marg Whitten and Osh Hodson and all the Whitten family in Toronto. Jack and his family came to Burnaby from Toronto in 1946, the youngest of five. He went to Kitchener, Alpha and Burnaby North High School where he met his future wife Bonnie Cavallin. They went to UBC and both became teachers in Burnaby. Jack and Bonnie were married April 13th, 1968 and off they went travelling across Canada and the US in his Pontiac (1968) Firebird convertible, built a home in Deep Cove while visiting Hawaii, which became a habit, at the same time skiing, playing tennis with his best buddy, his father-in-law, John Cavallin. Jack bought a boat and took his family and friends up Indian Arm, Desolation Sound, Sunshine Coast, Gulf Islands, San Juan Islands and made day trips out of Deep Cove. When his children, Lindsay and Christopher, came along they had to be part of the crew. He took them skiing and travelling everywhere and watch and videoed all their soccer and hockey games. He put in a pool for family gatherings and friends as well. Jack taught biology 11 & 12 in Burnaby, mostly at Alpha Secondary High School, for 34 years. He loved teaching and his students and they loved him. He said he had a wonderful life. Praise the Lord. Memorial service will be held at the Burnaby North Baptist Church 3977 Albert Street in Burnaby (1 block North of Hastings Street), Friday, June 16, 2017 at 12PM (Noon). Biology 11 & 12 with Mr. Whitten was a highlight of my high school education. He treated me with patience and extreme respect. That respect was mutual and I took those lessons forward into my adult life.

I thank God for Jack. I will especially miss his friendliness and humility. Jack, you are now with the God who wipes away all of our tears in the place where there is no more death or mourning or crying or pain. Bonnie, may the Spirit bring you and your family the peace that passes all understanding. May you feel the Lord's presence now in His promise to never leave you nor forsake you. He loves you very much.

Jack was one of my school associates (mentor teacher) during my practicum at Alpha Secondary in 1989, and I later worked with him at Alpha. He had a great passion for biology, and he showed love and care for his students. I learned much from him, including how important family is. My condolences to the family.

Mr. Whitten was my grade 11 Biology teacher at Alpha. He was a very kind and caring person - I enjoyed his classes and was very saddened to hear about his passing. He was one of many teachers that inspired me to go into the teaching profession with a specialty in Kinesiology. My thoughts, love and prayers go out to his family.

I met Jack & Bonnie through Burnaby North and I remember Jack's funny sense of humour and big personality. He was well-loved by everyone and will be greatly missed. Peace and love to you, Bonnie, and all the family at this time.

I was deeply saddened to learn about Jack's passing. He was my much-loved science teacher at Alpha Secondary, and I will always remember him for inspiring me to learn and for caring so much about his students. Many of us affectionately referred to him as Uncle Jack in highschool, and I will fondly remember him for his dedication to teaching and for the encouragement he gave me.

My condolences to the Whitten family at this difficult time.

Dear Bonnie, Lindsay, and all the family,

Jim and I were very saddened to hear of Jack's passing. We both have many happy memories of times with Jack and, of course, my memories go back even further than Jim's. My first memories of Jack were of this handsome guy, my big cousin, Bonnie, was dating. To just a kid you both seemed like some movie stars living a dream. Jack was very special to me as he was always such a kind and caring person.

Bonnie, you had a wonderful life with Jack and I know he was the instigator of many adventuresyour first big Europe trip, building your dream house, boating, etc. My parents certainly enjoyed their times with you on the water! I remember well how you bought a car in Europe since it was cheaper than renting and there was some story about having it lifted on a ship. It did all sound so exciting and that was probably a main reason I pushed Jim into going to Europe the first summer after we both had jobs. And that led to many of our own adventures.

It was very special for Jim and me to know you when we were all adults. I know our times together were quite infrequent after we moved to Victoria, but you both still held a very special place in our hearts. Our times together since we moved back to Vancouver have been a lot of fun and we enjoyed Jack's stories and sense of humour.

The last time we saw Jack will forever live in our memory as such a joyous time. It was wonderful to see everyone so happy. We are so glad Jack lived to experience Lindsay settled into a lovely family and for him to experience being a grandfather.

You are all very much in our thoughts at this difficult time.

Love,

Jim and Janice and Richard.
