Dear Patty, Rose and Family,
I was unaware of Jacob's passing and was just informed. I am so very sorry for your loss and even though I am just now expressing my sympathy; please know that the loss is still genuinely felt. He was one of a kind and will be missed. Xavier will be very saddened that he was never able to meet Jacob. I think the same sentiment might have been shared.
Sincerely,
Pamela Howard-Brooks

Dear Damien,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your father was amazing. If it hadn't been for him starting HFS I would never have been exposed to the music I heard growing up that made me the person I am today. Your father and the music you yourself played on the radio sparked my interest and passion so much so that I pursued my dream of a career in radio. Thank you so much for being a friend and mentor to me. I'm so sorry again.

Damien and family,
Sorry to hear of your loss of your father and loved one.
I marched into Jake's office right out of college at the age of 22. Pretty sure at that point, I just wanted to see "RNR." We had a conversation about all night K-Marts and the next thing I knew - I was hired for radio sales. And this was Jake! His willingness to take a risk and not be afraid to march to his own beat, was not only an influence in music - it helped to influence the course of my life. The memories live on.

Damien: God Bless you and your family as you bid farewell (for now) to your dear father. I interviewed him once myself. He was, as some would say, quite a pistol! Thank God for that pistol. He certainly left his imprint on yourself, for you kept his soul going in local radio for so many years. We miss you and Jake on the airwaves! Hope to see you on the 21st. God Bless

Dear Damien, David and extended family,

Joshua Brooks called me in France, where I am living, to tell me of Jake's passing.

As part of Spiritus Cheese, with Josh and Sara Vass, we knew Jake from the the beginning of WHFS of what was to become an icon of freeform/underground radio, a veritible institution.

Even though we had our differences at times Jake will always remain strong in my mind as somone who took chances on what was an untried and brand new form of radio programming.

Truly a piece of work; an incredible colorful personality in radio that unfortunately is missing in these days of tightly formatted corporate consulted radio today.

What more can I say? It's hard to believe it's been almost 40 years!!!
He lived a long life. God bless him!

He'll always live in my memory!

Jake, a veces yo te extraño.
Cuando me quita el sueño tu recuerdo
Cuando en las tardes se despide el sol.

Jake, a veces yo te extraño

Jake, a veces yo te extraño
En la sonrisa de una buena amiga
Y en el verso de una bella poesía.

Jake, a veces yo te extraño
Y al recordarte, me hiere, me hace daño,
Y aunque me matas… a veces yo te extraño.

Damian and Dave,

My deepest sympathies at the loss of your father. I only talked to him a handful of times in 1998 when he was still involved with WYRE... and one thing was immediately clear. He was passionate, creative, and actively involved in everything he did. The legacy of WHFS championing so many of rock's most enduring artists (early in their careers, when your father owned the station) speaks volumes for his vision and love of broadcasting.

I also know that he loved his family very much... having heard Damian talk about the great holiday dinners and gatherings that Jake had at his house.

You might be grieving now, but you will never forget the love and legacy of your father... and how he touched the lives of so many. Keep the Faith!

Jake and WHFS, the station he started, gave so much happiness to so many of us. It truly was one of the best radio stations in the country. For thousands of Washingtonians, the station provided a sense of home as well as an introduction to so much great music. The good old days live on in our hearts and memories and as some have noted, the good will & ripple effects will continue. Damian, David, Patty and the rest of the family are some of the finest people you could hope to meet and I join all the others in offering my condolences on that loss.

Damian, I'm so sorry to hear of your father's passing. HFS was home for many of us, and your father was the head of the household. He made life better for a lot of people, myself included, and I will always think of him with the fondest of thoughts, as I do you. Mojo sent, my brother.

My sympathy is extended to your entire family. DC was so lucky to have been touched by his vision. Jake's alternative radio format was the best. I still have a cassette tape of the final airing of the Bethesda HFS 102.3 from 1983. A sad day, but the music lived on for sure.

Dear Teresa and to all of Jake's family,
I was saddened to read of Jake's passing last week in Sunday's WP. My biggest regret is not staying in touch more. I will always have fond memories of "Lunch on Tuesdays" at Sam and Harrys and all the wonderful stories Jake shared with me. His absence will be felt by many.
My thoughts are with you all, Andrea

I remember discovering HFS shortly after it began. I was 16 at the time and there were no other progressive stations in the D.C. area. Damian, you and your family are in my prayers at this incredibly difficult time. Thanks to your Dad and you for an incredible ride the past 33 years. The legacy lives on!

Thank you for the many years of support for music, both local and national. The influence of WHFS is deeply felt throughout the music industry and among the fans. Without WHFS there wouldn't have been success for groups like Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris, Nils Lfgren and so many more. Jake, you were sometimes hard to deal with, but you were always a good friend. I still remember you treated me to very nice lunch at a nearby restaurant; afterwards you started yelling at me and it lasted until we got back to the station. I could still hear you in the elevator on my way out. But a couple of hours later it was as though it never happened. Thank you for making it possible for me to promote so many memorable shows.

It is hard to believe that Jake is gone ... he truly was one-of-a-kind! I always appreciated the start he gave me in radio, working for WHFS from 1974-1988, and I regretted that I could not continue with the radio family on WRNR due to professional commitments at my full-time job. Jake's willingness to take risks certainly changed the face of DC/MD radio. I have so many memories of Jake as a business man, a family man and a friend. My condolences to the entire Einstein family.

One of the best experiences in my life was working for Jake on WRNR 103.1FM. In 1974, I worked at WWCU (Catholic University Radio) when I met Jake in the mid 70's and tried to get a part time job at WHFS 102.3. Although he didn't hire me, he allowed me to come to the station to help out. I recall working in the station library, mending album covers and hanging out with Bob "Here". I've been on the air at WMUC 88.1FM (University of Maryland Radio) since 1991. It was in 1995, shortly after he purchased WRNR (then WXZL) that Jake put me on the air. After several months working for him, Jake told me, "I like your (broadcast) style." which remains among the best compliments I've ever received. My deepest sympathies to Damian, David and the entire Einstein family. Another one of Washington Radio's icons may have passed, but has touched many hearts and left us with many fond memories.

Dear Tere:

Jake is blessing you from heaven and thanking you for all the wonderful moments, those laughing and joyful times and bright and sunny days he shared with you. He has seen your tears as he was fading away but he would be keen to see a lovely smile on your face and only have happy memories of him.

Jake lived his life to the fullest. He loved his family gatherings, good food, good wine, and good friends. He enjoyed going to his club so much. He was very kind and generous by nature. Remember our the New Year's together and all the happy Sunday meals I shared with you, Jake and his family while I lived in DC? I was alone and he opened his home and his heart to me.

I am really sorry I did not have a chance to see him once more time when you brought him to Peru last March as I was hospitalized and later recuperating from my surgery.

Laugh and be glad for all that life has given you and, although dead, Jake will share your joy from heaven.

Please extend my condolences to his family .You are in my thoughts and prayers and my heart goes out to you in the days ahead.

I will be waiting for you in Lima or maybe I will visit you with Kitty in Potomac.

God bless you!

Sorry to hear about the loss of Jake Einstein. I only met him once when I interviewed for a job at his station and he gave me some great advice on how to get into radio in this area. Coming from a true pioneer, his advice to me was like gold. Thanks in part to Jake, I'm still doing radio many years later.

Sincere condolences to Jake's family. I first met Jake in the EARLY 50's when my Dad opened a restaurant & bar in Glen Burnie, MD and Jake had much helpful advice to offer. My dad, Jack, died in 1953 and I kept the business until 1971. Jake was a great person!

In my interview with Jake for an on-air job at RNR back in '95 ('96?), I had actually called him a pioneer, and he gave me the funniest look, one of "kid, I ain't that old". I quickly changed that word to maverick. Yes, Jake was a maverick. I am so grateful and so proud to have worked for him. I respected him tremendously. I was in awe and even a bit afraid of him. We all were at RNR. He was brilliant. He had a style that few could ever replicate. The freedom he gave us as djs permanently changed my perspective on what radio was and should be. Jake - you will be missed, by all of us - your employees, the listeners who tuned in to what you created, and all of the musicians who you helped into the business. Thank you for touching all of our lives in so many ways.

To The Einstien Family; I am very sorry for your loss of your beloved father, grandfather and husband. He has left behind a legacy in his passing. He made radio something worth listening to in the 80's and beyond for me. He changed the way I heard music forever. WHFS taught me that there is more music out there then the top 40 that typical radio forced fed us. Having met him just a few times when he came to Annapolis I will remember him as a pioneer in music and as his own man. Damian if you see this please contact me. Regarding your upcoming Apreciation Show in October, maybe we may want to include a tribute to Jake?

We never met, but I'm grateful for what Mr. Einstein did with WHFS. It was wonderful to discover the station back in the late sixties - really my first FM experience in the DC area. It was fun getting to know Cerphe and Josh and to hear our music on the radio, also a first for my band at the time.
