Jacob Nelson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 17, 2024.
Jacob "Jake" Nelson Jr., age 53, passed away unexpectedly from heart complications in the arms of his fiancé and surrounded by his loved ones on June 8th, 2024. He was born February 9th, 1971, in Quincy, MA, was raised in Canton, MA, then spent most of his life raising a family in Duxbury, MA, and, in his final years, resided in Kingston, MA with his fiancé. Jake was raised by his loving mother, Susan (Mastandrea) Nelson-Trombley, and his stepfather, Ernest. J Trombley of Canton, MA.

Jake, a Blue Hills Regional Technical School graduate, dedicated three decades of his life to working at the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, where he served as a mechanic and foreman, eventually retiring in 2016. Anyone who knew Jake knew his highly amusing stories from working with his "T-Buddies."

Jake's zest for life was infectious, and he made sure to celebrate every single moment. He was often heard saying, "Life is about having fun and not worrying about everything else." Jake was unapologetically himself, a trait that endeared him to everyone. He had a love for video games, 90's rap music, anything science fiction (Jake was convinced extraterrestrial life was real and walking among us), animals (there wasn't an animal he met that didn't love him), and a newly discovered love for traveling, which he cherished with his fiancé. He had a passion for sports, an activity he spent his high school years heavily involved in, and an anecdote he never shied away from highlighting. Jake was very proud to be inducted into the Blue Hills Athletic Hall of Fame for his efforts in sports later in his life.

Jake's selfless nature was a defining trait. He found the most profound satisfaction in helping others. Whether it was a family member, friend, neighbor, animal, or stranger, Jake would drop everything to lend a hand. He spent several years and thousands of hours volunteering at the Scituate Animal Shelter, where he did abundant work to better the lives of animals. He never sought thanks or recognition; he simply wanted to help. His loving nature is what he will forever be remembered for. Jake's loved ones have found comfort in the notion that his endless love, care, and selflessness will live on through his decision to be an organ donor. Jake would be incredibly proud to know that his passing will allow three individuals to carry on their lives free of pain and struggle because of his donation. Jake was very proud to display his unique heart-shaped birthmark in the corner of his eye, symbolizing his loving nature. His heart may have caused him to leave us, but it is his heart that has helped and touched so many different individuals throughout his life. He will live on forever in all of our hearts.

Jake's love for his fiancé, Maryann Regan of Kingston, MA, was a testament to his devotion. He frequently referred to her as the love of his life and soulmate. His two children, Olivia Nelson and Jake Nelson of Duxbury, MA, were not just a source of immense pride for him but the reason for his existence. There is nothing he wouldn't do for them. These three individuals were the center of his world. He strived every day to make these three feel safe, happy, and completely fulfilled, and boy, he did just that.

Jake is survived by his fiancé Maryann Regan of Kingston; his two children, Olivia Nelson and Jake Nelson of Duxbury; his mother, Susan (Mastandrea) Nelson-Trombley, and his stepfather, Ernest J. Trombley of Canton; his sister, Suzanne M. Conley, and her husband, John of Canton; his sister, Jennifer Nelson Lebowitz of Canton; seven nieces and nephews; several aunts and uncles; and several dear friends, including his former wife Beth (Gallagher) Nelson, the mother of his two beloved children. Jacob was predeceased by his grandfather, Martin A. Mastandrea, a father figure to him.

Funeral services will be held at Saint Joseph Parish (272 Main St, Kingston, MA, 02634) at 10 AM on Friday, June 21st. A celebration of life will immediately follow funeral services at East Bay Grille (173 Water St, Plymouth, MA, 02630).

What a beautifully written obituary. I can attest to Jake's selfless nature from the first time I met him. I was dropping by his family's home on Lincoln Ave. in Canton with my new girlfriend Janine Murphy to meet her relations on our way home from a vacation. The drive up from Virginia put a hurting on our car and I remember Jake not hesitating to lend a hand. No warning from us--just a mention of the fact--and no fuss from him. It was a lasting first impression and I'm not at all surprised that there have been many beneficiaries of his generosity in his too-short lifetime. Rest in peace, Jake.
