Jacqueline Jernigan Ammons died on October 13, 2009. She was born May 22, 1930 in Rocky Mount, NC to Eugene Carl and Lossie Davis Jernigan. She is survived by her husband, William John Ammons, 57 years of marriage. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her sister, Jean Rudolph, her daughter, Jackie Lee Ammons, and her grandson, Forrest Ammons. Survived by her are her three sons who have devoted time, efforts and most of all love; Stephen Ruffin Ammons and wife, Kim, Frederick Judson Ammons and wife, Sherry, William John Ammons Jr. and Jennifer Sandy, Bonnie Ammons-mother of Kristen and Judson, and Mary Ammons-mother of Cole, Sammie and Jackie. She also is survived by seven grandchildren who were the joy and happiness of her life-Kristen, Judson, Cole, Jackie, Sammie, Paschal, and Kelly. Jackie graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1948 and attended Women’s College in Greensboro where she received a degree in B.S.H.E. She was editor of the Pine Needles Annual and was selected as an outstanding senior. She was President of the Wendell Garden Club and member of the Hoe ‘n Hope, The Thursday Afternoon Club and taught Sunday school at Wendell Baptist Church for many years. With her dear friend, Delores Dean, she owned and operated The Flower Shop for 40 years and through her kindness she spread her love and heart with many people. She was a friend to all who knew her. Last but not least, Jackie was a wife, mother and Billy’s best friend for 57 years of happiness. She will be missed by all. She wanted her legacy to be that her boys have been men all their lives. They, along with their mates and children, have given devotion, joy and love in abundance to their Grandy and Grumps. Thanks to Dr. Charles Mangano and Dr. Timothy Hart, who instilled in her hope and courage to “get on with your life.” A special thanks to Dr. Intini and his staff for their support and care. Thanks also to Helen, Barbara, Carolyn, Ann, and Dr. Nichols for their care at home. Visitation will be held 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Strickland Funeral Home in Wendell. I interviewed Jacqueline for a book I was writing on the history of the WC (Woman's College) here in Greensboro. We had a phone interview in late 2008, and as we talked, I so admired the things that she had done at the WC and thereafter. I did not know her personally, but I hope her family is somewhat comforted by knowing that I could tell, just from that 45 minute conversation, what a great lady Jacqueline was. My book will come out in 2012, and I plan to dedicate it to her.

Dear Billy, Johnnie, Fred, Stephen and families....I know these days, and the days to come, are hard, but like so many others said, Heaven got a new angel the day Jackie left this earth! I have so many fond memories of our families together and Jackie was just another one of my "moms" when I was growing up! She was indeed a special person to me and of course, mama and daddy. Please know my prayers will continue to be for you all in the coming days. Sending hugs..

Bill, Johnny, Fred and Stephen,

I am sorry to hear about the loss of Jackie, and boys, your mom. Like all the entries that were written before me, your mom was a very special, wonderful lady. My earliest memories of her is when she would come to the barns with the first lightning strike and make Billy stop farming till it was over, of ordering my prom date a boutonniere in 10th grade and to her directing my wedding over 25 years ago. She has always been a major part of Wendell and will always be in our hearts.

Bill & Family;
You have our deepest sympathy, from my
Family. Jackie was always a kind and
sweet woman. She did the flowers for one of our daughter's. She was a person that always had a smile on her face. Her and Bill would do anything
for you. I know they're going missed
her. It was a shock to me, when I heard she had pass on to Glory Land
with her Lord.

Jackie was one of my mom's best friends, I overheard a phone conversation that the two of them had last week while she was in the hospital. They laughed for what seemed like the longest time. Mom had the phone on "speaker" so I could hear Jsckie laughing too. It sounded like two school girls gossiping. I will always remember Jackie. She was a strong tower to all of us who knew and loved her. Her daugher Jackie Lee was my best friend and I have many great memories of the Ammons clan to hold on too through the years. Thanks to all of you for being so special. My thoughts and prayer are with you during this time and will continue to be with you in the weeks ahead. I believe that there is a 'Mother-daughter" reunion going on in heaven right now and what a wonderful time they must be having.

My prayers go out to the Ammons family. I know that she will be greatly missed. When you talked to her she was always smiling and showed joy to all. When I got married, the preacher forgot to tell us to kiss, Mrs. Ammons was the first one to kiss me!. Heaven now has another jewel!

Miss Jackie was a dear and sweet woman. Her kindness to me as a newcomer made me feel less alone and like I belonged. I received more than flowers from her, I received kindness and love. Remember how blessed you are as a family to have the wisdom she imparted and the love she shared.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Ammons family. I have known Jackie and the rest of the family all of my life. She was always very kind and helpful as she watched all the kids grow up into teenagers and then into adults. Her daughter was one of my best friends during my childhood. There was never a dull moment when we visited at the house. It saddens me that she is gone and will be greatly missed by all.

What a special lady has now gone to be with the Lord. We have many fond memories of Jackie. May your precious memories of her bring you comfort and support in the coming months.

Ms. Jackie was such a dear lady to so many people. I worked with her when I was in high school and she made all of my prom corsages and later my wedding flowers and my daddy's funeral flowers. She always made me smile when she would tie a "bow ribbon" as she called them. She taught me so much about floral design, but she also showed her compassion and love for others in the designs that went out of that shop and I am so grateful to have known her and worked with her. My family has all of you in our thoughts and prayers during this time.

Jackie-

My memories of you are so special. You had a gentle spirit about you that I loved. You were always had an ear to listen and help in anyway. I have a picture of you and me as a baby sitting at the pond. From day one, you have been in my life. I remember you and Billy driving me to my great grandmother’s funeral. You had taken the time to make a beautiful potted arrangement with fresh vegetables and garden tools because that was what she loved. It was the special touches. I remember waking up early every Saturday to work in the shop in high school. You always would carve out a special time to teach. I still think of you when I decorate a Christmas tree or arrange simple flowers. I remember the phone ringing at the shop at 5 pm with a funeral and knowing that it would be a late night. Many nights you would stay and work until the wee hours of the morning. Not for the money, but because you cared and wanted that day to be perfect. When my Granddaddy, Donald Wayne, passed this spring, you made a point to call and let the florist know “exactly how the flowers should be arranged”. Again, it was the special touches. Who can forget getting a knock at the door with an arrival from the flower shop. The bright yellow card was one that everyone could not wait to get! I remember you helping me with a project on Germany in school. You came to my parent’s house and told it like a storybook…I was mystified. Again, the special touches. Later in life, I was fortunate to have you do the flowers for my wedding and come out of retirement for one last “wedding director” performance. To this day, I remember standing at the back of Wendell Christian with the doors closed. The church was filled and it was time for me to go. You said “It’s Time” . I said “are you sure?”. You just smiled that special smile and opened the doors to the beautiful church. Jackie , sometimes we are not ready to go. Sometimes we want to stay. God said this past Tuesday “It’s time”. I am sure you said “are you sure?”. Then he opened the doors to the most beautiful church in the world and you smiled that smile (and I am sure it was that freshly applied lipstick smile). I love you Jackie.
