I knew Jacques from his time in Ruanda in the 1950's when i was the Curator of the Uganda Museum. I admired his visions of Africa and ability to appreciate other societies. His work on Ruanda is perhaps his greatest legacy - a world disappeared but remembered through his words, photographs and museum exhibitions. He had a wonderful vision of the totality of the African experience and he saw Africa through his great understanding of other worlds towards the end of his career increasingly from Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia. He will be missed for his erudition, willingness to share that knowledge as much as he was admired.
