I've been honored to have known Jim over the past several years. His tireless campaigning for veterans was an inspiration to everyone. He was an Energizer Bunny! He always had a smile on his face and goodies for our office. I was in tears when I heard of his passing. Jim, you will truly be missed.

Jim was a great friend of my fathers. I cannot believe he is now with my daddy. I am so sorry that mom and I did not attend but I just saw this now. Please know that we appreciated and loved Jim for all he did for his fellow veterans and the great friend he was to my father Raymond Gagnon. Rest in Peace. You and daddy don't cause too much problems up there in heaven.

I work for the NHSPCA in Stratham NH and we own the Rolling Meadows Pet Cemetery in Stratham where Jim has laid 4 of his cats to rest. Jim Loved his cats and wanted them to be in the Cemetery so he could visit with them when ever he wanted. During the service for his cats, Jim loved the reading The RAINBOW BRIDGE, and would always request that. I asked Jim once why he liked that verse so much. Jim said because it says they are waiting across the Bridge for me and someday I will get to see them running, and playing. They will look up and see me with their nose twitches, their ears up and staring at me. They run to me and we cross over that bridge together. Well Jim, There is no doubt that you are enjoying your cats once again over that Rainbow bridge. Rest In Peace my Friend....

We all extend out deepest sympathy to Jim's family. Jim was a constant shopper at the Commissary and always had a greeting for the cashiers, office workers, and meat cutters. His dedication to veterans was foremost in his life and we will miss him greatly. Rest in Peace, Jim

I met Jim in 2006 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Commissary after asking about a customer who kept buying 25 pound bags of walnuts in the shell. Turns out, it was Jim Alty buying treats for his backyard squirrels and food for his beloved cats. Over the years we became friends and it was due to Jim that I got to know about, visit and support the Dover Children's Home, NH SPCA and the Loki Clan Wolf sanctuary. Jim had an encyclopedic knowledge when it came to veterans issues and resources. He was generous with this time and his money and over the years, bought and gave away dozens of books, T-shirts and jackets without asking for anything in return. Jim was feisty and opinionated and a real champion when it came to fighting for support of his fellow combat veterans. Jim took networking to a new level and knew who to reach out to and which arm to "twist" (and did it repeatedly without apology or hesitation!) whether it was a fellow veteran, an official at the VA or a state politician! Jim was especially concerned and passionate about the high rate of suicide among our combat veterans and dedicated his later years toward finding solutions to eliminate this unnecessary loss of life. He talked about this often and the discussion would sometimes bring him to tears. This feisty, salty, opinionated and intensely patriotic lightweight of a guy was a real heavyweight who fought and won the good fight for our nation's veterans on many an occasion. We can honor Jim's memory by taking up the torch he carried and following in his footsteps along the trail he spent his life blazing.

I worked at a local grocery store and watched one day as he came through and got talking to someone about his work for veterans. One guy spoke to him and said he’d served, then another and another. He had a group of about four or five over by the exit before he left. They all were talking about their service and had great respect for each other—it was clear. An amazing moment brought about by him just being him. He was a great man. My sympathy to the entire family....

I first met Jim years ago when I worked the Rochester Police Department and Jim became a friend and fellow Vietnam veteran. I hadn’t seen Jim in years and one day he walked into the NHSPCA where I work as an investigator. I had just rescued a large number of animals and it was on the news. Jim brought in a donation for the care of the animals that were rescued. Jim and I talked about our service and what he was doing to help fellW veterans.
On many occasions over my 19 yrs with the NHSPCA Jim would stop by to visit and always hand me a donatIon for more rescues. Jim has a big heart for animals in need and Has helped other animal rescues in NH. I will miss you Jim as a friend and veteran and our talks. It was an honor to meet you again and it was my honor to know you.
Rest In Peace Jim. You are among our fellow veterans now and we will all meet again someday. My condolences to your family and all the veterans that will miss your support Jim.

Jim was a wonderful friend to my father, Bob, and to me. My dad knew if he needed help from the VA, Jim was the one to talk to. I got to know Jim through my dad. I always enjoyed Jim's company and our phone conversations, and I will miss seeing and hearing from him. Jim's legacy and generosity will live on in this community. Jim, you've met your highest calling now, flying with the angels. Job
well done, my friend. You are dearly missed by me and others.

Fly high my friend. What an amazing man and journey you've had. It started two yrs ago for me when there was no one in the building. You would come and bring treats and tell me stories and have coffee. You couldn't wait for us to have residents so you could help them. Thank you Jim for keeping me company on those weekends and sharing your life stories . Thank you for your service.
