James Beck Obituary
Jim attended Detroit Catholic Central HS class of "44" and after graduating Jim proudly served in the U.S. Army. In 1951, Jim married the love of his life, Ellie, and was hired by (SKF) Glaxo Smith Kline as a district manager in pharmaceutical sales. Jim continued furthering his education and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Wayne State University and a Master of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University.
During their marriage, Jim and Ellie enjoyed traveling and cruising. They were also involved with PALS as volunteers at three Sarasota county public schools. Volunteering did not stop there! They also enjoyed ushering at Van Wezel and the Sarasota Opera House. Jim and his daughter Debbie gave of their time every Friday to Meals on Wheels (2020-2023)
Jim found solace and strength in his faith and was an active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Lay Minister of the Eucharist, usher, and a member of 50 plus years in the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi. In 2017 Jim and his daughter, Debbie, also made a religious pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy.
In his free time, Jim enjoyed playing the concert bass in the Venice Symphony and electric bass guitar for STM's "The God Squad" performing at local area nursing homes. And if you have ever read the Herald Tribune's Opinion page you might have read one of his many Letters to the Editor.
Jim will be remembered at a Celebration of Life Mass at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at 10:30 am. Contributions in Jim's memory can be made to a charity of your choice. He leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Jim often quoted Pope Francis, "It is not enough to say we are Christians, we must live the faith, not only with our words, but with our actions."
