James "Jim" Benjamin

January 17, 1962 – February 10, 2025

James "Jim" Benjamin, 63, of Oneonta, NY passed away on February 10, 2025, after a brave battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Jim was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, known for his deep love for family and his remarkable ability to connect with others.

Born on January 17, 1962, Jim lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and kindness. He was a beloved husband to his wife, Susan, and a proud father to his children, Nicholas and Megan (Andy)Chmelko. Jim's love and support were a constant presence in their lives, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He is also survived by his siblings: Steve, Karen, Michael, and Mark, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Jim is further survived by his sister in-laws, and brother in-laws, who were an important part of his life and whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his father Jack and his mother Mary and his in-laws Keith and Cynthia McCarthy.

Jim had a lifelong commitment to helping others, working for many years as a school guidance counselor, where he made a difference in the lives of countless students. He was also a passionate baseball umpire, officiating at both the collegiate and high school levels. He was a proud member of the Schohanna Umpires Association, and served as their rules interpreter. He was known for his love of the game and of course, his tight strike zone. He earned the respect and admiration of players, coaches, and colleagues alike.

Outside of his professional life, Jim was a talented guitar player and writer, often finding joy and solace in music and words. His creativity and artistic spirit were evident in all that he did.

A Memorial Service and a Celebration of Life is scheduled for June 14, 2025 at the Oneonta Elks Club from 2-5pm.

More details will be provided as the date approaches.

The family of Jim kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Schohanna Umpires Association. Your contribution will support a Section 4 Senior Student Athlete in Jim's memory, helping to continue his legacy and passion for sports.

And now I'm glad I didn't know

The way it all would end

The way it all would go

Our lives are better left to chance

I could have missed the pain

But I'd have had to miss the dance

My sincere condolences to Sue and all of Jim´s loved ones and family.
In high school Jim was a self-assured popular guy and an accomplished athlete who crossed the usual social boundaries imposed by high school life with his friendliness and especially his love of music and own musicianship. I admired his guitar playing, and appreciated his telling me about .38 Special long before anyone was talking about that band.
Many years later, when I would return to Oneonta for high school reunions Jim was always especially welcoming. His behavior toward me reminded me that at any age, if you choose to, you can be a great guy. Jim was a great guy.
