After the war, the family moved back to their home town to Lebanon, MO, where Jim great up and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1962. He attended Missouri State University in Springfield, MO, before joining the military. His service in the U.S. Army Security Agency with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade included a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1967-68. Jim's radio career began in high school working at KLWT, and in college at KICK, and KWTO.

Once a month Jim Bohannon would tear out the hard advertising pages while broadcasting Coast to Coast. These pages were irritating to me also!

Funny, I miss Jimbo terribly. I never met him in person, just listened to him on the radio and had the absolute honor of speaking to him on air. He's one of those "friends" I will never stop missing. I wish I could have told him good bye and God Bless. But why? We will finally meet some day. God Speed Jimbo.

And I also miss Sharon from Crane MO. And yes even Gill from the Philippines
God Bless you all.

I was thinking of Jim on this Memorial Day because he was a Vietnam Vet when I ran across these condolences. So I am adding mine very late.
I worked with Jim and his former wife Camille in 1980 at Chicago's WCFL when it was an all news station. I was part of Jim's behind the scenes morning crew.
Jim was the same fun, professional, non-assuming good guy off the air that he was on the air. He was definitely not a primadonna! His quick wit and sense of humor were always endearing.
Jim even saved my job when one of my coworkers (who hated women) made up some lies about me and tried to get me fired! Jim had witnessed the entire incident and told my News Director that the guy was lying.
We were all thrilled for Jim when he began substituting for Larry King on King's coast to coast radio show during that time.
I suspect Jim never had a co-worker who didn't like him and that says a lot in the high stress field of Broadcasting.
Got a call from him many years ago just checking in to see how I was doing. He was that kind of guy.
On the rare occasion when I was up late enough at night to listen to Jim's Coast to Coast talk show I remember thinking he sounded just the same as the guy I knew in Chicago almost 40 years ago and that he deserved all the success he had throughout the years!
God bless him and his family!

I liked the final hour some nights when Jimbo would do what I called his "Down Home Jim" segment, just talking to the callers and ruminating about whatever tickled his fancy. Truly a great, natural conversationist. One of a kind. Sadly missed.

It's a sad day. I just learned about the death of my former friend Jim Bohannon. I met Jim and first wife Camille when I wrote news copy for them when we all worked at WCFL AM-Radio in Chicago. Jim was indefatigable, working and learning nonstop. He and I were buddies and kept in touch after he moved away. He was one-in-million and he will be missed very much.

Listened to Jim Bohannon for 40 or more years, from back when he regularly filled in on radio for Larry King, and when King moved on to CNN TV, I listened to him when he took over and kept that show going from many decades. He has a wonderful voice for radio and a very nice and generally peaceful mannerism that made him very endearing to listen to. He was also very enlightened and able to address, very intelligently, a broad range of topics. He had and held to a serious set of values and principles, that probably developed when he was serving our country in the military, including in Viet Nam war ... which shaped him and which he always took very seriously. Jim Bohannon was a good man and a patriot who showed a lot of respect to most people and for the military and for most aspects of America and American life. He leaves big shoes for anyone to try and fill!

Incredibly, I did not know till tonight (Dec. 20) that Jim passed away last month. I so enjoyed listening to his rich, mellow voice and common sense and thought he would have made a fine President. I am so glad he was on the air for so long.

I am truly sorry for your loss. My husband and I aways listened to Jim before turning in for the night. My husband passed from the same cancer in December of 2008. He was only 58 and we were getting ready to celebrate our 40th anniversary. I can only thank God that it was a very quick cancer. I was shocked when I turned on the radio and he let us know that this was his last show, then he was no longer there. It is hard but he will always be with us. I am truly sorry and will miss him immensely. God Bless

Hey Jim, I hope you know how much you've touched us. You made us think, question, evaluate, and reconsider our misguided perceptions.
Thanks for the fun we had at every Talkers Convention. Your smile to me while I spoke from the podium caused me to talk directly to you. And you always laughed at my inept attempt at humor.
Your good heart made great radio. How interesting that you will be remembered by our industry as the one who has proven that the talkradio of 20/30 years ago is still valid today if done well. You, my friend, did it impressively!
The paradigm changed, but you didn't.... and we're all better for it.
Rest in Peace, and live on in all of us.

Never met Jim but have been a loyal listener for many years. The Jim Bohannon show was such a treat for listeners in radio land who each night valued the variety of guests but especially the wit and wisdom of its host. May the Song of Farewell be sung for Jim Bohannon, a good man.

As a very long-time listener of Jimbo's show, I am beyond saddened by his passing. An intelligent, moral voice has been silenced and as everyone knows, the world needs more people like Jim, not less.

I heard when he said, just a few weeks ago, that this was his last show. He was very private about his illness, but I had a feeling that he was very ill. There are many lessons to be learned from someone like Jim Bohannon.

Among them is his humility. As smart as he was, he was always humble, enabling those around him to shine. Very few people have that ability.

As an Orthodox Jewish woman I would like to humbly share something that perhaps will ease your pain. The soul of such people lives on forever. Why? Because the mark he left in this world will go on in the people he touched. Aside from his immediate family, Jim's values will be remembered by hundreds of thousands of his dedicated listeners.

I offer my most sincere condolences at this very sad time in your lives. Your husband and father brought much light to our often dark world and that light has now been dimmed.

I left a message for Jimbo's family earlier but would like to add a comment about how much I admired his amazing wealth of knowledge. Any time I had to miss his broadcast, I felt that I had missed an opportunity to learn. I also particularly enjoyed his part in America in the Morning. That shift to John Trout was the most seamless of any I know of. I'm certain Jim was a major player in this move. His input will be greatly missed.

In my lifetime, Jim Bohanon was one of best late night talk show hosts, one of the smartest, most generous in spirit with the range of late night callers who joined his entertaining show aired for us conservative night owl listeners. As my local KMOX died off years ago in its long tradition of such programming, Jim had become my only option. He will be missed by me and millions of others.

His amazing six decade career in radio will never be surpassed. Just a listener saying that Jim's voice resonated through the nights of weary studying and being on call at the hospital during my training and for so many years of my professional and personal life. Even his odd side takes so recently on America in the Morning kept me listening in the wee hours on the west coast. His voice was soothing as a lullaby but compelling so staying awake was obligatory. RIP. The long nights will not be the same.

I had the honor and privilege of working with Jim early in my career at Mutual. Gracious, kind, witty, patient are just some of the words that come to mind.

He showed everyone how to be a consummate pro and a total gentleman.

In the 30 years since I worked as an editor at Mutual/WW1 I have always loved listening to him and I always remark to myself and others "now THERE is a total class act.

Thank you Jim not only for your service both on and off air but for showing a generation of broadcasters how it´s done.

May the sadness of this time give way to a lifetime of happy memories for all who know and love Jim.

I met Jim when we worked together at WCFL radio in Chicago in 1981. He was the morning anchor, and I was the street reporter. I got to know Jim as one if the best newsmen I have ever worked with in 50 years in the business. An honest, wonderful human being who really cared about journalism and how it impacted our lives and the body politic. Long after we worked together we would talk and get together to reminisce and share our common bond of the love of radio. I have lost a true friend. America has lost a great voice of trust.

Alone in the car, late at night, driving on some highway or another in America. Jim Bohannon on the radio. The two of us sharing that ride. That´s how I got to know Jim Bohannon. Years later, sharing a broadcast studio with the man behind the voice, hearing that great rumble up close, always put me right back in that car.

Jim was demanding professionally but a softie at heart. When my young son visited the Westwood One studios one night, Jim spent time talking with him and discovered his interest in space and astronomy. After that, he would set aside for my boy any books on those subjects which came his way. A small gesture from a man with a big heart.

The world is a little less warm, a little less welcoming with Jim's passing. He was a great guy and a great American. For many years while I worked at Mutual NBC Radio, I joined Jim and another journalist of note, by participating in his Friday night weekend Roundup. He couldn't have been a more gracious host. He loved people and he loved giving them a platform to tell their stories. After a few years he started allowing me to substitute for him and it was a huge pair of shoes I was left to temporarily replace. But it was a ton of fun as he was. He will be greatly missed!!

I was his engineer on that first talk show they have him and stayed his engineer on the show for sometime. When he to one the Larry King show I was again his engineer. We worked together closely even after going to CBS I worked with him replacing his Engineer. Several times. He was a veteran and a big supporter of the Military. He could often be found at the Viet Nam Memorial . He was quite a man an excellent talk show host and I considered him a friend.
I loved working with him and will always remember it. Radio will surely miss him as will his friends, coworkers and family. My wife, Betty Clark, and I visited him at the CBS studios and sat in on his show. My prayers for Annabelle and his family as well as his friends.

Jim Bohannon was "my radio - husband" or "work-husband" for many years in the '90s, and before then was a good friend and workmate to my late husband. It was fated that I should meet the man, and I am grateful that he endorsed my returning to help produce his show 20-plus years after I left.
I have many memories of the man, but I think that now the family and their memories are the ones that Jim would find most important. It's one thing to be kind to colleagues and mates, but it is another thing to join and become one with a family. I bless his family and friends. We all will miss Jim for many different reasons. And, I hope our memories bring us more laughter than tears.
