Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 7 to Apr. 14, 2004.
James Stephen "Jimmy" Buchanan, 39, died in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, March 28, 2004, as a result of an accidental injury. He was a beloved son of Mrs. Patricia Ozella Stroupe and Mr. James Raymond "Jim" Buchanan. He was born April 1, 1964, in Milford, Conn., and attended primary school at Bret Harte in Cherry Hill, N.J., East School in New Canaan, Conn., and Dr. Karl Bleyl Junior High, Campbell Junior High, and Cypress Creek High School in Houston, Texas, where he played trumpet, slide trombone, and tuba in the Cypress Creek Cougar High School Marching Band. In his youth, he was a Boy Scout who loved animals, talking on CBs, racing go-karts, skeet shooting, target practice and setting off fireworks. Throughout intermediate and high school, he was actively involved in volunteer work with the Special Olympics and with "Teens & Friends," a local organization helping to provide social fellowship and support for young adults with physical and mental disabilities. After high school, he attended nursing college in Clearwater, Fla. Among his many skills and talents, he was a licensed vocational and practical nurse. He loved concerts, staying abreast of popular artists, amusement parks, and his family. He was quick to laugh and smile and slow to anger; always unlikely to hold a grudge or stay mad for very long. He was deeply spiritual, a proud and devoted father, kind and loving friend, and dedicated husband. Known to his wife and friends as "Jamie," to his family as "Jimmy," and to his father as "James Stephen," he will be remembered as a big kid who had a child's innocence, spirit, faith, hope and imagination, a man's wit and responsibilities, and a sweet, gentle heart. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, the former Helen Gilligan of Pascoag, R.I., and Raymond Buchanan of Gilbertville, Mass., and the former Mary Katherine Crouse of Surrey, N.C. and Stephen Porter Stroupe of Wytheville, Va.; precious nephew, Ian Buchanan Nesbitt; Aunt Margaret and Uncles Lester, Garland, and Warren Stroupe, Aunt Dorothy Stroupe and Uncle Russell Henderson, Uncle Paul Cregger, Uncles Eli Rider and Bob Welch; and cousins, Larry and Brenda Cregger and the former Lynn Morrissey.
