James Buchanan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 8, 2011.
JAMES "JIM" LINDY BUCHANAN

James "Jim" Buchanan age 83 formerly of Edinburg, passed away May 30, 2011 at Canterbury Villa in Alliance, Ohio. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Helen (Slack) Buchanan. He was born April 27, 1928 in Smithfield Township, Jefferson County, Ohio to the late Wilson & Mary Chloe (Cunningham) Buchanan. His family lived in Deersville and Cadiz, Ohio before moving to Edinburg in 1941.
Jim was a member of Carpenter's Union Local 639 and worked as a Superintendent for Krumroy Construction, Sykes Construction Company and Barr Construction Company. Although he preferred working on larger construction projects like schools, hospitals and office buildings he often did smaller projects like homes, barns, kitchens and bathrooms for friends and family.
During his life Jim liked to trap, hunt and fish. He had great enthusiasm for sports and had boxed, played basketball and soft pitch ball. He enjoyed watching or playing sports with his family as well. Jim always had a smile, loved to laugh and keep things light. He had an easygoing spirit that put others at ease, especially young children. He knew a story or a song for every occasion. His life long dream had been to have a horse and in his later years enjoyed owning a few horses.
In addition to his wife he is survived by sons Robert (Sandy) Buchanan of Florida, William (Sherrie) Buchanan of Carrollton, Thomas Buchanan of Florida; daughters Carol (Jim) Lamb of Warren and Janice (Lynn) Kent of Edinburg; grandchildren Brenda (Patrick) Rau of New York, Terri (Brian) Schlosser of Texas, Heidi Keohane of Virginia, William Buchanan of Ashland, Eric (Christine) Kent of South Carolina, Julie Hopkins of Ravenna and Laura (Kenneth) Chitty of Virginia; great-grandchildren William and Thomas Buchanan, Michael and Nick Hopkins, Matthew Kent, Hudson & Caden Schlosser and Riley Keohane. He is also survived by sister Betty Gray of Ravenna, brothers Richard (Lucille) Buchanan of Stow, Wilfred (Doris) Buchanan of Florida; sister-in-law Goldie Slack of Edinburg and brothers-in-law Gerald (Lola) Slack of California, Dana (Patricia) Slack of Indiana and Wilbur Walvoord of Sabina. His parents, brothers Walter, Stanley, Robert and David Buchanan, sisters Evelyn Hesford, Verna Buchanan, Dorothy Lowe and Marjory Walvoord all preceded him in death.
Friends will be received Sunday, June 12, 2011, from 2-5 PM and from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Monday at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, with funeral services beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at the Edinburg Cemetery immediately following the funeral. To Aunt Helen, Bob, Janice, Bill, Tom, Carol, along with each of your families: I regret that it has been many years since I last saw Uncle Jim; time passes by too quickly. I will always remember the good times with him when we would visit Ohio or when he and Aunt Helen would come to Florida in their camper truck. Uncle Jim would always have a funny story about my Dad and vice versa. It was obvious how much they loved each other. I wish I could be there with you in the celebration of his life, but trust that I will be thinking of him and all of you. Love, Vickie and Jim Tanaka (in Guatemala)

Uncle Jim was one of our favorite Uncles. He had a twinkle in his eye and he always made us laugh. He was a very talented carpenter who shared his gift by helping us when we built our house. We will miss him here, but look forward to seeing him in Heaven.
