James CALDERHEAD Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 9, 2023.
James S Calderhead passed away peacefully on January 5, 2023. He was born on May 31, 1928, to Samuel J and Fraser Calderhead in Seattle, WA. He grew up in Broadmoor and graduated from Garfield High School in 1946 and the University of Washington in 1950. He enjoyed recounting his many interesting adventures of hitchhiking to high school.

At the UW he was a member of the PHI Delta Theta Fraternity and on a blind date met the love of his life, Jeanne E O'Brien, who preceded him in death in 2010. Until her death, they continued to celebrate the day of their first date.

James went to work in Seattle for Lincoln Savings and Loan Association in 1950, which later became Washington Mutual and then Chase Bank. He was transferred to Spokane as their Senior Executive Vice President in 1970. He always said his first job, parking cars at Longacres, the horseracing track, in Renton, WA, was one of his most enjoyable.

He was active in many community organizations including Rotary, United Way, Boys and Girls Club, Chamber of Commerce, St. Lukes Hospital Foundation, Spokane Airport Board, and Empire Health Services.

James will be remembered for his sense of humor, love of people and animals, long walks, and love of life.

James is survived by his children Laurie (Arthur Fournier), Brent (Armida), grandchildren, Breanna Bragg (Eric), Faith, Evangeline, great granddaughter Ava Bragg, brother-in-law, Hiro Kawasaki, and nephews, William, Jr, David, and John. He was preceded in death by his brother William.

The family wants to thank the staff at Rockwood Retirement Center for making Jim's last few years easier and enjoyable. A reception to celebrate Jim's life will be held at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Habitat for Humanity, 732 N Napa St Spokane, WA 99202, Rockwood Foundation, 2903 E 25th Ave Spokane, WA 99223, or the charity of their choice.

I am so sad that our world no longer has Jim Calderhead in it. He was such a fantastic guy, and I was so lucky to have known him. He and Jeanne were very special friends of my folks, and there were so many funny tales about their adventures in Maui and in Spokane that we heard. Lots of laughter and tall stories...and maybe some fibs about their golf scores. Jim always brought laughter to my dad with his phone calls - always brightened Dad's day. I wish we'd known Jim was back in Spokane these last few years - we would have delightedly visited him. I think I'm hearing laughter and joy from heaven, now that Jim's back with his beautiful Jeanne and with his pals. Love you always...
