James DeBow Casey Sr., known affectionately as DeBow and Papa, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, at the age of 84, with his family by his side in Nashville, Tennessee. Born on January 21, 1940, in Franklin, he lived a remarkable life filled with love, faith, and devotion to his family.

DeBow was a man of charisma and warmth, known for his outgoing personality and infectious spirit. An exceptional athlete, he excelled in basketball, tennis, and golf during his years at Battle Ground Academy (BGA). He captained the basketball team his senior year, leading them to a district championship, and was later named BGA's Player of the Decade for the 1950s. After graduating from BGA, he continued his basketball career at the University of Tennessee, playing his freshman year before enlisting in the United States Army. On September 30, 2017, DeBow was inducted into BGA's Sports Hall of Fame, a testament to his enduring legacy as an athlete.

DeBow carried his love of sports into his role as a devoted father and grandfather, never missing a single game, meet, or match involving his beloved children and grandchildren. His unwavering encouragement and presence on the sidelines were a source of strength and pride for his family.

DeBow's love for life was as loud and joyful as his singing voice, which could be heard from miles away. One of his favorite sayings, "You gotta laugh to keep from crying," was a philosophy he lived by and a lesson he passed down to his family, who will continue to cherish and uphold his enduring wisdom.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Laurine Vail Casey (Ginger), and his siblings: Evalina DeBow Casey Cheadle, Dudley English Casey, Jr., and Lidah Casey Johnson.

He is survived by his children: James DeBow Casey Jr. (Kathy), Bronson Wallace Casey, Samuel Compton Casey, Laurine Casey King, and Christian English Casey (Cecy). He was the proud and loving grandfather of Kathryn English Casey (Anthony), Christian Gregory King, Walker DeBow Casey, Jack Dunwoody King, Laurine Mary Casey King, Samuel Harrison Casey, Garth Wallace Casey, William Rankin Casey, and Cecelia Vail Casey.

DeBow is also survived by his loving partner, Jean Flippen, who brought him joy and companionship in his later years.

The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating DeBow's remarkable life at a memorial service on Saturday, January 18th at Belmont United Methodist Church, located at 2007 Acklen Avenue, Nashville, TN, 37212. A visitation will begin at 11:00 AM , followed by the memorial service at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, reflecting the generosity and joy he shared with the world.

DeBow will be remembered for his love of family, his booming voice and laughter, his athletic achievements, and his unwavering support of his children and grandchildren. His legacy is one of love, joy, and inspiration that will continue to resonate with all who knew him.
