James Ciske Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2024.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Erwin Ciske of Royal Oak, Michigan. He was 69 years old. He passed away peacefully and spent his last days surrounded by his children, grandchildren, family, and friends, all of whom loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Erv and Sandy; and his dear brother, Bob.

Jim was born and raised in Royal Oak, Michigan as the eldest of four children. He graduated from Kimball High School and remained a Royal Oak resident for his entire life.

He worked as a custom home builder in his twenties, followed by a long career at the US Postal Service until he retired. He was an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle rider who enjoyed taking road trips out West and to Northern Michigan. He was also a die-hard baseball fan, and he could often be found listening to Detroit Tigers' games on the radio next to a carefully constructed bonfire, Labatt in hand.

More than anything, he was a proud, loving, and devoted son, brother, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind two sons, Sam (Colleen) and Steven (Melissa); his brother, Bill; his sister, Sandy; and four grandchildren, Briggs, Xavier, Hadley, and Violet.

In lieu of sending flowers or gifts, the family requests that you consider sharing a favorite memory you have of Jim.

Thank you for everything, Dad. You will be missed beyond words. We will love you forever.

My memory of Jim is his SMILE. I never saw Jim without a big smile on his face. When he rolled into the driveway you saw a smile on his face. When he got down to dog level to greet Scrambles and Huey there was a big smile on his face. When playing with Xavier and Violet there was that smile in full force. I can't say that I ever saw him not smiling. I know that he is lighting up heaven with that Big Smile. We will meet again one day and he will greet us with that Big Smile. May he rest in Peace.

Ciske was so layed back, but yet , so outspoken. He always spoke and was always kind. He taught me a few tricks to unstacking pallets with the forklift at the USPS. I'd always ask how his dad was doing. It was a pleasure to work with you Ciske; R.I.P.

We were saddened to hear of Jim´s passing. He truly was one of a kind. He had the best laugh ever and was always quick with a joke. We both remember meeting his sons, Steven and Sam, years ago when they were still quite young, and thinking to ourselves what wonderful young men Jim had raised. The boys were polite and gracious beyond their years. Jim was so proud of them, and rightfully so, and was ecstatic when his boys married and eventually gifted him with grandchildren. He beamed when talking about them and couldn´t wait until the next time he could see them. He was also truly just a good man. He worked at the post office with our brother, John, and always looked out for him. Their friendship continued after they both retired, and John always looked forward to Jim visiting him on his Harley, spending time chopping wood for their campfires, having a few beers together and talking about life in general. Jim´s positive energy and thoughtfulness will be missed by all of those who knew and loved him. He will be missed.

I spent all my teenage years at the Ciske house. There are so many memories to list. They treated me as part of the family of which I was always thankful. Jim was the best!!! You could call him anytime night or day and he would be there for you. Love you bro!!!!

When Sam was in the 6th grade, the school had an overnight field trip to Greenfield Village. My son and Sam both went so Jim and I were chaperones. I really got to know what a good man and a proud father he was and he will be missed.

I only had the opportunity to speak with him twice. I was beyond excited to share what a wonderful son (Steve) he has raised. It shines through who he was as a father and person that he could raise such an amazing person who is caring, loyal and has such a great personality! Mr.Ciske I pray you´re enjoying all of your favorite things in heaven. We will keep your family company until you all meet again. With Love- Becki Petersen
