My sympathy to June and the family of Burton Coffman. He was truly a wonder and it was so awesome to hear him quote chapters of the Bible...even in his latter years! We were privileged to attend the 100th birthday celebration at West University last year and see him stand and preach that day! He gave me several of his commentaries and books across the years. I served as secretary at the West U church in Houston for over 33 years, and am so glad I was able to know this great man of faith. His legacy will live on!

To the family of James Burton Coffman,
You wouldn't know me, but I am one of the millions of Christians who have been influenced by the writings and preaching by this great soldier of the Cross. Thank God and thank you, his family, for sharing him with us. I heard him speak once in the church in Normangee, TX when he was about 90. What a voice, what a speaker, what conviction and what simplicity of thought and delivery was the man and the Gospel he preached. I have used his Commentaries most of my adult life in teaching Bible classes and the several times I have preached for one little Texas congregation or the other that needed a pulpit man for a day. The greatest victory for the Christian is to go home and be with the Lord. May you cherish his memory as he was your physical family on this earth, and rest contented that many souls have been brought into the eternal family through Jesus Christ our Lord and the great preachers and teachers throughout the ages, of which this simple preacher was one. God Bless you all, and rejoice that so many men such as I cherish the memory and the brief association with this great hero of the faith.

Our sincere sympathy to the Coffman family and to the family of Jesus all over the world. Burton was a great friend to missionaries and we spent the night in the Manhattan guest quarters and visited with Burton and Sissy while missionaries in France 1949-1958. He opened his pulpit to me to speak at Manhattan and Houston about our mission efforts in Paris. I loved his bass voice and preaching and truly enjoyed hearing him quote from memory the geneology of Jesus. He loved the ACC tent and lectures. That's where I bought his Commentaries. Great folk. Great memories.

What a marvelous man, great gospel preacher and author, and an encouraging friend. When I was born in Houston, my parents were members at Central where Brother Coffman was preaching. There are countless memories of him and Sissy while still at Central, at Manhatten, his earlier books, hearing him preach, letters of encouragement, and the list could go on. Our blessings and prayers go to June and the family and the great host of friends who have been touched by his life. His faith has now been perfected.

I heard Burton preach on the Book of Jonah, and he quoted the entire book! He was 93 then.

We at the Manhattan Church of Christ in New York City, where Burton ministered so effectively from the 50s into the 70s, continually thank God for the amazing ministry of this remarkable man. The church here has two services each Sunday morning in the auditorium and building that he had the courage to envision and that he labored so hard to build. The church still has the cosmopolitan, multiracial, multiethnic character that he fostered while he was here. It also remains a church devoted to Biblical teaching and to outreach across the whole metropolitan area, just as he made it. There are so many wonderful, funny, and serious stories of Burton's exploits in New York and of the many people he interacted with. We praise God for all the amazingly fruitful positive heritage that Burton has left to all of us in Manhattan. Our Library is dedicated to the memory of his ministry and now will be a memorial to Burton. Sometimes God raises up a man for a particular need in a particular time and place. Burton's great ministry at the Manhattan Church of Christ was just such a case of a man called to face a great challenge and with God's help to fulfill his ministry. Though Burton's active ministry here ended 35 years ago, we are still very conscious that we stand on his shoulders as we look ahead into the third millennium and work with God's help to build this church that he devoted so much of himself to. May God bless June and all of Burton's family and loved ones. We will all be praying for you and for the continued positive influence of Burton's decades of ministry.

Uncle Burton taught me to love travel and history from weeks spent traveling with them in New England, Canada, and Texas. I still have things he made me back in the 60s. What a sweetie-pie with an encyclopedia mind!

What a blessing Burton was to the life of my family. He was a wonderful preacher of the gospel and a Christian example to all of us. He was such a part of my life as he baptized me when I was 11 and performed my marriage ceremony for me when I was 20. He has meant so much to my life for the past 60 years and I will always remember him for his faithful life.
