JAMES CURRIE Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Sep. 16 to Sep. 20, 2014.
CURRIE, James Howard
A dedicated public servant (1934-1984)
An exceptional man and a generous, humble, kind soul passed away of natural causes, at age 97, on September 12, 2014. Howard´s loving presence, kind heart, gentle manner and steadfast patience will be deeply missed. A true gentleman, caring for his family and friends, giving freely of his time and of himself, marvelling at nature and all its creatures. His professionalism and sense of humour were known by all who worked with him over the many years of his long and respected career as a federal public servant. He will be fondly remembered as a wonderful neighbour and friend by all those who had the privilege to know him. For over six decades, Dad lovingly maintained our home as a welcoming place for all members of the family and their friends. His thirst for knowledge was unquenchable, and his memory for people, places and things was outstanding. He had a love for music, especially classical, and held season's tickets for the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he enjoyed attending shows at the Orpheus Operatic Society and listening to radio broadcasts of Don Messer and the Islanders from PEI. His passion for life was boundless - he loved animals, nature, people, gardening, swimming, walking, skating and bicycle riding. As a skilled handyman, he could often be found tinkering around our house, inside or out. He marvelled at the way technology was taking over the world. Every single day, he awoke with a goal in mind, big or small. He could regale you with stories from his past, as if they just happened yesterday, and he could recite poems he learned in school, word for word. His working life required travelling to many countries and, once retired, he and Mom visited Portugal every winter for a well deserved vacation.Throughout the years, he was interested in local and community affairs, serving from time to time as an officer in a few voluntary organizations. For his dedication, he received citations and was awarded honorary lifetime memberships. Howard was predeceased in 2007 by our cherished mother, his beloved wife of 58 years, Connie, as well as his three sisters, Kathleen, Louella and Lois. He is survived by his half sister, Diane Lance (Don), and his children, Nancy, Paul (Patty), Colleen (Tim), Claudia (George), Janet (Joe) and Ian (Catherine), as well as his treasured grandchildren, Lauren, Stacey, Brantford, Brooklyn, Alexandra, Jessica, Hannah and Nathan, all of whom are very grateful to have inherited their senses of humour and compassion from him and Mom. As a family, we spent a lot of time together laughing. Howard enjoyed a 50 year career in the federal public service. He served for several years as the honorary Secretary of the Official Side of the National Joint Council of the Public Service of Canada, which considered policies and practices in government employment. His crowning achievement was the creation of the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety. He was the founding Chairman of the Council of Governors and has had the distinct honour of having a boardroom in the CCOHS Headquarters in Hamilton, Ontario named after him. He took great pride in the fact that the framework they created for the safety and health of workers in Canada is used as a template by many countries around the world, as are its educational services. He actively participated in the development of standards and services in this general field produced by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Social Security Association (ISSA) in Geneva, Switzerland. In respect of Howard´s wishes, a funeral will not take place and a private family gathering will be held to honour him and to celebrate his long and remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, Howard would have been pleased with a donation in his name to an organization whose efforts benefit nature and the welfare of animals.

Howard was an exemplary father and encouraging friend to many. I feel grateful to have known such a kind, charming and generous man, who passed these traits on to his family. As a newcomer and later inhabitant of Ottawa, "far from home", I was invited to birthday dinners, receptions and other Currie family events on many occasions. I thank Howard and the entire Currie family for their welcome. My sympathies and thoughts are with you.

To my friend Nancy. I didn't know your dad or the rest of your family but, after reading and hearing the stories at his memorial service today, it was an honor to be there. And no doubt your dad was very proud of all you have and are doing in life! Hugs to you my friend.

When we moved to Fraser Ave in 1980, we were warmly welcomed into the Currie family, a relationship we have cherished all those years. Howard's wit and charm will be sorely missed.

Deepest sympathies to Paul, Nancy, Colleen, Claudia, Janet, Ian and their families.

Dear Colleen and family,

I am so sorry to learn about the loss of your dad. I know his passing will leave a tremendous hole in your family. I didn't know your father, however, I have heard so many stories about his vibrant love of life, his sense of curiosity and adventure and of his devotion to all of you. My sincere condolences. Keep all the fun and joy you shared with him close to your hearts. You are in my thoughts.

Unfortunately, I did not know Howard;what a wonderful, interesting and accomplished man he obviously was. I do know two of his daughters. He leaves such a fine legacy in them. Howard must have been immensely proud of his family.

Uncle Howard was a special man, he treated everyone with respect and in return was respected by all. His visits to Wpg. were highly anticipated and he never disappointed. The Currie kids may of had the best two parents of all time. Our thoughts are with them.

My favourite photo of Howard.

Howard was the father we all wished we would have had! What a privilege to have been even close to that family circle, and to have hours with him over years.
I feel the loss of 'fatherhood' with his passing. But I remind myself that he would want us to be happy. He lived the best, gave the most, loved unreservedly - deeply and long. What a legacy to leave.
With great respect,
Pamela

Over the last few days I have had many thoughts about my uncle Howard. He and Aunt Connie opened their home to my mother Lois and my siblings after the sudden passing of my father in 1970. His kindness will not be forgotten. His many family reunions over the years were wonderful and his backyard visits to 520 Fraser too. He was a great man. My heartful sympathies go out to the Currie clan.

I was so sorry to read of your Dads passing. He was a wonderful and kind neighbour. I have many memories of him, chatting from the deck and admiring his vegetables, his nightly walks with his dog, trimming his trees, coming for a swim, and bringing my mom the paper every morning when she was failing and his eloquent job as MC. My thoughts are with you all.

Paul, Nancy, Colleen, Claudia, Janet and Ian. I was blessed to have your family as next door neighbors. Our families were very different - but that is what makes us stronger and more appreciative of the many ways families thrive. Howard was blessed to have great kids and grandchildren. I will always remember his tidy yard, our fort in the garage, his laugh, his strong and curious mind, his love of his dog, and the time I found him outside looking up at the stars in awe after having his eyes operated on. Howard was always interested to hear what I was up to when I came home to visit "602" and I always tried to get over to "598" for a quick visit. My thoughts are with you and my mind floods with memories - which I hope you will all treasure too.

Howard was a joy to know and an honour live across the street from. I met him first and knew I was blessed when I saw his willingness to share his tools and his knowledge with home ownership. Our friendship grew to include drinks out on the patio and dinners shared. I became acquainted with ALL the Currie children and Grandchildren over the years, YES, you are a wonderful testament to his great spirit. Sending love to all.

For the last 10 months or so, my Dad had been in poor and declining health. His will to live was indomitable, despite the myriad of afflictions that plagued and distressed his body and mind. A small army of doctors (Viner, Malek, Giddings, Fisher, Jordan and Lee - to name a few), CCAC nurses (Chantal, Connie, and Alisha) private carers (Diane Delorme, Pat O'Reagan, Laura, Jessica Currie, and Mary), Eldercare PSW Cara Chapman, Carers from Ottawa West Community Support (Hamda and Isaac) PSWs from Bayshore Home Health (Sandra, Remi and Carrine) and eventually Carefor palliative care nurses (Bonnie, Nova and Uwe) – they all took meticulous care of Dad. Not to be forgotten either are: the many Paramedic teams that responded to 580 throughout the months; the doctors and nurses at the Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus); Joan Hayes and her team at the Medical Pharmacy; and the Elizabeth Bruyere Palliative team. I am grateful for your compassion, patience, understanding, and professionalism. Thank you.

I remember Howard going way back to high school years, as a man whom I respected and looked up to, but who also made me feel welcome and comfortable in his home (when he was there :-). We shared a birthday too, and especially in his later years I would often think of Howard and reflect on all that he had accomplished in terms of his family and his professional life...it was humbling. James and I send our deepest sympathies to the entire Currie clan, and especially to Janet and Joe at this sad time. xxx

Hard to believe that Howard had been a public servant for close to thirty years before I joined the department. At that time he was piloting the development and introduction of the Canada Labour Safety Code. I came to know him well over the subsequent twenty years of his career. I met with him from time to time after he retired and enjoyed responding to his questions as to how the department he loved was faring. He made a significant contribution to occupational health and safety administration and I am not surprised to read that he continued to contribute to society for the rest of his long life. My sympathies to Janet and the family.

How fortunate I am to have had the love and kindness of Mr. Currie since I was a child. I LOVED going down to his workshop. His woodworking skills were second to none, making my sister and I beautiful bookshelves when we were kids. Wish we could have had one last martini together. My love to all the Currie family.
