James Diggory Obituary
JAMES C.
83, formerly of Sq. Hill, died on Saturday, October 23, 2004, at the Willows of Presbyterian Senior Care, Oakmont, PA after a long illness. Dr. Diggory was professor and chair of the Department of Psychology at Chatham College from 1966 until his retirement in June, 1983. He earned his A.B. at Kings College, DE, 1942, in philosophy with a minor in Greek. Previously he taught at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both his M.A., 1943, and his Ph.D., 1948, in psychology, and was elected a member of The Society of the Sigma Xi, 1947. His research applied the empirical methods of experimental psychology to philosophical theories of self. His major work was Self-Evaluation: Concepts and Studies (1966). During his tenure at Chatham, Dr. Diggory was awarded the Buhl Professorship in Psychology. He also had numerous publications of his studies during his academic career. Within the Pittsburgh community, Dr. Diggory was active in several cultural organizations including the Pittsburgh Savoyards and La Societ Dante Alighieri. He was an avid concert goer, voracious reader, and a devoted gardener, cultivating the art of bonsai, and maintaining membership in the Bonsai Society. Dr. Diggory was born in Philadelphia. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carlanne H. Diggory, in 1993. He is survived by his son and daughter from a previous marriage, Terence Diggory of Saratoga Springs, NY, and Edith Mellow of Huntington Woods, MI; four grandchildren; and his two sisters, Edith Merli of Spring Lake Heights, NJ, and Alice Frick of Woodstock, VT. H.P. BRANDT FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. There will be no public viewing hours. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 30, 2004 in the Welker Room in the Laughlin Music Center at Chatham College. Memorial donations may be made to the Chatham College General Endowment Fund and directed to Chatham College, Office of Institutional Advancement, Woodlawn Rd., Pgh., PA 15232.

Jim was a lovely and lively soul..He was the sweetest of men. A gentle giant and so talented. He and Carlanne are together again.

Dr. Diggory was a major influence on my intellect, and taught many naive undergraduate students like me the beauty and rigor of statistical analysis.

Jim was such a great "boss" and friend. I worked with him at Chatham until we moved to DC. We shared woodworking projects and parties with the Savoyards at our house on Murrayhill Ave. Jim was always excited to get another new tool from Brookstone (before it went upscale!)When Jeff & I visited Brazil, we stopped at Hector Villa-Lobos' museum to get some guitar music for Jim and had Madame Villa-Lobos wait on us. Jim was a fantastic teacher of many subjects and a true Renaissance man. I am richer having known him.
