Oh, my father loved laughing with your father! So many good times with the Scottish Games, the athletics, the tea barn and then later the bothy. I will miss seeing Jimmy on Main Street and at the UD football and basketball games. You will miss him every day but our lives were all blessed by his sunny outlook and joie de vivre.

We knew Jimmy through his association with the Scottish Games. He will be sorely missed there, as he was a loyal participant for many, many years. I loved running in to him at the Tea Barn. He always had that Irish twinkle in his eye! Jimmy's energy and enthusiasm for life was contagious, right up until the end. He was so proud of his family, all very accomplished and wonderful people. My heart goes out to the entire Flynn family.

Your father (my Uncle and Godfather) was a natural born story teller and devoted man of God. He loved my mother (sister Jacqui) fiercely and she him. Although our time together was limited, I will remember his warm hugs and big personality. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Coach Flynn was a mentor to me. He pulled me off the baseball field at Carpenter Fieldhouse in 1966 telling me he needed another sprinter for his track team. I did as he said and it was one of the smartest decisions I made in my whole life. He was a good man and positive all the time. He was a motivator in person and spirit. I appreciate all he did for me and made me realize I could do for myself. Thanks Coach. Rest In Peace. My thoughts are with the Flynn family.

Coach Flynn was such a quality guy. Loved playing for him on the freshman football team and interacting with him at our fraternity functions. What a fun guy and so full of life. Brother Jeff loved coach Flynn and was very good friends and always spoke highly of how great a guy he was. Coach Flynn RIP.

Dear Flynn family,. I had the pleasure of living over Jimmy these last 10 years in the Washington House. We would often talk over the balconies to each other. He was always taking care of his beautiful flowers. I remember several 4th of July times when we watched the UD fireworks from our balconies. He was such a nice man and loved to share family stories. He will be missed. Suzanne Thompson

To the Family of Mr. Flynn,
I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Flynn at UDs Twilight Ceremony. He said he liked to watch the ceremony every year and sit near the football players. He also shared with me about his family, his wife and his time at UD...and how much he enjoyed seeing the students. I cherish this memory....quite an extraordinary gentleman!
I am so sorry for your loss. I'm certain he will be be very dearly missed by everyone.
God Bless You All,

I loved Coach Flynn. In a sporting world with a glut of pretenders, Coach Flynn was real. Whatever he said was what he meant, and what he was going to do. He and Coach Pratt, did everything they could to help me be the best that I could be, as we worked for the Conference Championship.

He was a wonderful man who l had the pleasure of knowing. Jim worked for me as a summer co-ordinator when l was employee with the New Castle Co. Parks and Recreation Department. He was also instrumental in getting me the position as Chain Crew Supervisor for the UD Football Team. He has been a true friend. I will surely miss him.

Coach Flynn was a decent and fun loving man. I always liked his winning attitude and his drive to always do your best. He was always fair with his athletes, but expected them to strive to succeed as best they can.
May he rest in peace and may God bless him and the family!

With Coach Flynn's passing, I am reminded of the many games of racquet-ball we shared back in the early '70s. My only defense against his speed and determination was long arms and legs that still left me short against his take-no-prisoners attitude! I will always remember his bright smile, endless energy and sincere love of all things Blue Hen. My sincere condolences to all his friends and family as you mourn your loss.

Not mentioned was Jimmy's love of Racquetball. Skilled and quick, Jimmy won a lot of local tournaments, and was a fierce competitor.

Jimmy was one of my favorite people ever. He made all of us laugh, and work hard, as he coached our track team. His strong faith was evident in any conversation, and his love for his family was as strong as I have ever seen. His "kid of the week" policy made sense and I am not at all surprised to hear that he watched every match and performance of his extended family. I always felt warm and appreciated in his presence, and I am grateful he and I crossed paths. I think of his family and the loss they feel, but his faith in God may help assuage the feelings of sadness. My thoughts and prayers are with you. God Bless. Jim Siemen, former track athlete at UD.

Mr. Flynn was a great tennis friend of my father Steve. I played baseball with Jack and Jimmy and strung racquets at the Jock Shop with them. Great memories of Jim Flynn!!! My condolences go out to the family. My Dad would've been sad to know of the loss.

Jim Flynn was a good man. He and his sweet wife Fran and their 6 children lived across the street from our family. When i was young I had the pleasure of babysitting his children and saw the amazing parenting skills they both had. He was a proud father.
I will miss running in to him and chatting as we had done over the past 50 years or so I had the pleasure to know him. My sincere condolences to the family.

In the years I knew Jimmy he was a valuable volunteer at the Delaware Sports Museum as well as an Inductee in 2009. His story that his size kept him from getting a football scholarship to Notre Dame (like some of his relatives) is memorable for me. Notre Dame's loss became the Blue Hen's and the state of Delaware's benefit.

It was a sad day for me to learn of the death of the first high school athlete I recruited for the University of Delaware. Jimmy was recommended to me by my special friend and his Pittsburgh Central Catholic coach Nick Skorich. Jimmy was the start of several Central Catholic student football players that I was fortunate to recruit for the Blue Hens. Jimmy on occasions baby sat Rena and my three daughter. We have stayed in contact with one another since the first day I met him , when he was in High School. God Bless His family and with jimmy's soul in God's Kingdom Coach Jesus is building an outstanding Blue Hen Team. Coach Mike Lude

I always enjoyed seeing Coach Flynn when I was back for Delaware football games. I was lucky enough to have Coach as my Freshman football coach in 1971. He was a fine man and a wonderful human being! I am saddened to hear of his passing but my spirits are lifted knowing he lived a charmed life and gave it his all! RIP Coach Flynn!

When a student a UofD, Jimmy was asked by my parents, Mike and Rena Lude, to babysit his daughters. I am the eldest and must have been 5 or 6 at the time. At the time, I asked Jimmy for me to grow up so that I could marry him. He was my first love, other than my dad, of course. My dad, now 98, was the Line Coach for the Blue Hens during Jimmy's years there, and had remained in friendship with Jimmy ever since. Jimmy was one of his football boys and was much beloved! It is sad to say good bye to old friends, but Daddy and Jimmy share the conviction that they will be together in the next life.

A very sad day learning that my old and dear friend has passed. We coached together for time and were good friends for a long time. He was so proud of his kids and always told anyone who would listen about their current exploits, but never talked about himself, and he had plenty to talk about. RIP old friend, Bill Thomson

Thank you for this beautiful summary of a most beloved godfather and uncle. Uncle Jim was larger than life for me and my sisters, always bearing gifts, tricks, treats, songs, stories and good fun. Even in his eighties he was eager to enjoy every element of life. Sending much love to his family.

Uncle Jimmy played a big role for us in Pittsburgh, indulging his little nieces and big sister Patricia. Always full of energy, puns, songs, even later in life when visiting my folks in Naples. Rest In Peace, with love.

The Chief is a true legend, a word used too lightly these days. He was known and beloved by so many people. For me, he was just a happy, genuinely kind man with a lot of catch phrases (call me pepperoni, cause I'm on a roll!) and good stories to tell (okay, some of them went on a bit long...). Oh, and a hell of a caroler! I wrote to the Chief a short while ago and reminisced how as a child at the Flynn house, when my friends would come inside from playing to go into the basement, I would always get stuck on the porch with the chief. Of course I wasn't really stuck, I would stay to listen to one of his many stories and hope to soak up some valuable life advice. I won't forget those conversations. The Chief was an awesome person that I am lucky to have known.
Personally, I'm glad my father now has someone else to discuss obscure Pittsburgh JV high school football statistics from 1983.
The Chief will be missed dearly.
