FUNKHOUSER, MD James William age 84, of Kettering passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. He was born on August 22, 1928 in Dayton, OH to the late William and Nellie Funkhouser. Dr. Funkhouser began his education by earning a Bachelors of Medical Technology from the University of Dayton. He then went on to attend The Ohio State University where he earned his Masters in Bacteriology and then his Medical Doctorate. Dr. Funkhouser served both his Internship and Residency at Miami Valley Hospital. From 1961-1962 he went to New York and was a Fellow in Pathology for the Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases and a Research Associate for the Sloan-Kettering Institute. Some special degrees that he earned include M.T.(ASCP) from the Registry of Medical Technologists, Diplomate from the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and Subspeciality Certification in Blood Banking. Dr. Funkhouser started his career as the Associate Director of the diagnostic laboratories of Miami Valley Hospital and after seven years of holding this title, he became Director. He was the co-founder of Community Blood Center, Community Tissue Center and was instrumental to the success of the IVF program at MVH. From 1964 until 1991 he was the Medical Director of Community Blood Center in Dayton. Dr. Funkhouser taught as a clinical professor at the University of Dayton, Wright State University School of Medicine and Clinical Laboratory Science Program. He was co-founder and Medical Director of CompuNet Laboratories in Miami Valley Hospital and of the Medical Technology program of Wright State University. Dr. Funkhouser retired from the medical practice on July 4th, 1997. He was a member of the American Association of Blood Banks, College of Ameican Pathologists, Montgomery County Medical Society, Ohio State Medical Association, American Medical Association, Active Attending Staff of Miami Valley Hospital, Ohio Society of Pathologists, Sigma Xi, Alpha Omega Alpha, American Association of Clinical Histocompatibility Testing, Ohio Society of Pathologists, Medical member of the American Society of Cytology, and fellow member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Dr. Funkhouser served as Graduate Assistant and Student Assistant for the Department of Bacteriology at The Ohio State University, President and Treasurer for the Ohio Association of Blood Banks; President of the Ohio Society of Pathologists; secretary for the Montgomery County Medical Society, President-Coordinator for Dayton Area Pathologists, Clinical Professor of Pathology and Executive President of the Wright State University School of Medicine, and as President and Treasurer for the Board of Directors for the Bureau of Medical Economics for the Montgomery County Medical Society. He was also Field Inspector for the American Association of Blood Banks, College of American Pathologists, and the American Society of Cytology. Dr. Funkhouser was a consultant for the USAF Medical Center and WPAFB and for the VA Medical Center. He was awarded a certificate of Service from the VA Medical Center Dean's Committee, a Certificate of Appreciation for Volunteer Services as Inspector for the College of American Pathologists, and was awarded an accommodation by the medical staff of Miami Valley Hospital for twelve years as Chairman of the Tumor Board. He was a past President and active member of the Safari Club. Dr. Funkhouser had many publications in numerous journals and magazines. He was a devoted, loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who had a great sense of humor, was generous, thoughtful and kind.
