James GODWIN Obituary
He was the son of the late Joseph and Mary G. Godwin. He was also a dedicated member of the Main Street Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sisters, Alice Parker and Elizabeth Crocker (Decatur); one brother, Alfred Godwin; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at Main Street Baptist Church, by the Rev. Dr. James M. Harrison. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, along with family visitation and musical tributes from 6 to 7 p.m., at the church. Shivers Funeral Chapel is handling the funeral arrangements. I met Pip at an early age, when I came to Smithfield to visit my great aunt Josey Watkins. I worked with him,and Brother Herbert Brown at Porter's store. They made me feel very welcome during my summer school brake. I will never forget those two. God knows how to lift up the chosen ones. I really believe Pip will hear God say, Well Done, thy good and faithful servant.

Pip was such a gentle, caring person. One who always greeted you with a smile and a kind word. I know Main Street will greatly miss him, especially the various choirs he sang in. My prayers are with you at this time of loss. Pip was a good friend of mine we share many laughs he always encouraged me everytime we talk. He called me his little undertaker and preacher when I started working at Pretlow and Chapman at the age of 10. I went to see him in the nursing home one day he was surprise I made a trip to see him. Before I left he said to continue to let God us me. I will miss him helping me park cars at Main Street for Funeral. A Great Soldier has taken his rest.
