JOHN PARKER
May 13, 2020
James was one of 2 people I met in my life I am convinced were geniuses, both of them from Literature departments at the ANU. I count myself blessed to have attended his tutorials and lectures - I got a greater appreciation of the major French novels from listening to him speak about them, than from reading the texts themselves, and remember leaving the classroom each time with a heightened experience of life.
I also had a few chances to correspond or meet with James as a friend outside of study, and remember with great fondness conversations about jazz, literature, his children, and rugby. He was passionate about so many things and brought his great talents to all of them; he was wonderful company. I cried today when my brother told me the news - my life would have been poorer without his contibution to it.
I send my deepest sympathy to his loved ones

My enduring memory of James Grieve, my amazing French lecturer, 1970 to 1973, will be his delightful Scottish/Irish
accent, and seeing him often riding his push bike in his linen jacket and straw hat. Jennie Roberts
