James Grimmer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 2, 2012.
The Rev. James (Jim) Brickell Grimmer Jr. (Mr. 100%), 75, of Lexington, husband of Anne Grimmer, died Thursday, August 30, 2012. Born August 25, 1937, in Raleigh, N.C., he was a son of the late James B. Grimmer Sr. and Evangeline Grimmer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William McGregor Grimmer. The Rev. Grimmer attended Ferrum Junior College and graduated from High Point College and Wesley Seminary. He was a United Methodist Minister in the Virginia Annual Conference for 38 years. Jim served the following churches: The Rappahannock Charge (Flint Hill, Washington, Sperryville and Willis Chapel) Bayley's Chapel, Portlock, St. Peters, Boonsboro, Chesapeake Avenue, Chester, Trinity, Foundry, Bellamy, and Calvary. After retirement, he also served as interim pastor for Oak Hill and Wayne Hills.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Susan of Kernersville, N.C.; two sons, Shawn and wife, Kate, of Tamarac, Fla., and Brian and wife, Suzanne, of Walnut Creek, Calif.; his special Aunt Billie and family from Vermont; a devoted sister-in-law, Diana of Southern Shores, N.C.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was honored to be named Pastor Emeritus at Trinity and was active in the life of the church. The Rev. Grimmer loved preaching at Blue Ridge Nursing Home and Kendal as well as being an active member of Lexington Kiwanis. It was his joy to be a member of Emmaus and Pilgrimage Communities. Jim was committed to his service in the Lexington Community and to the members of the Lexington Police Department where he proudly served as Police Chaplain for over eight years.
In the last months, Jim was surrounded by a family of loving friends and expert medical personnel including Dr. David Ellington, Carillon Home Health and Rockbridge Area Hospice, which has made the journey easier. During his life, Jim was blessed with a team of exceptional doctors who have treated him not only as a patient, but also as a friend.
A Service of Resurrection will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Norman Tippens and the Rev. Amos Rideout officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 147 S. Main St., Lexington, VA 24450; or Rockbridge Area Hospice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, VA 24450; or a charity of your choice.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.

We remember the Friday night get-togethers on the Lynchburg District. I remember the sermon preparation times with Jim and Murry Unruh on the Lynchburg District and with Jim on the Petersburg and Norfolk Districts. Betty and I enjoyed many happy times together with Anne and Jim. We will miss him greatly. Our condolences to all the family.

Jim was a good friend of my dad's. I remember good times when several pastors and families would get together and just have lots of fun. He will be missed. I join his family in grieving, but also remembering just how great a person he was.
