James Grindle

Missing you today and every day. Love you always and forever.

My dad, Howie Burns, once told me that the Grindle brothers were two of the fiercest competitors he ever coached. I remember in 1978, East Side Post 420 progressed through the loser’s bracket of the American Legion state tournament and had to travel to Lawrence, MA to play Norwood, a highly-favored team from the winner’s bracket. The game was scoreless into the late innings. John Small reached base, and with a 2-0 count, Jimmy laced a line drive to left center. Small, who was running on the pitch, scored the only run of the game. Jimmy had just finished 10th grade that summer. The pitcher for Norwood Legion was Ron Darling who pitched for Yale the next year and went on to pitch for the Mets. As we boarded the Greyhound to go home, I remember my dad pointing to the Norwood players who were drinking beer outside the trunks of their cars and saying to our team on the bus: “Look good at them. You just defeated them with their best pitcher and they’re drinking beer with their heads down. We’re coming back tomorrow to put them away”. The Green Machine came back the next day and beat them handily. Jimmy was fearless and dependable. I remember the pitch. It was a high fast ball, a little out of the zone. Jimmy kind of tomahawked it because it was a hit-and-run and he had to put the ball in play. Eternal rest grant unto Jimmy, Oh Lord, and perpetual light shine upon him.
