James Haughey Obituary

James (Jim) Wilfrid Haughey, 81, of Osprey, FL, passed away due to complications of lung cancer on November 6, 2024. He was born to parents Clifton and Margaret (Mustard) Haughey on February 3, 1943 in Portland, OR, and grew up in Walla Walla, WA, Battle Creek, MI and Toronto, Canada, where he graduated from high school. Jim attended the University of Michigan and received his bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees in Economics. He also earned an MBA at Eastern Michigan University.

He and wife Barbara Jane (Wirsing) Haughey lived in Ann Arbor, MI, Lancaster, OH, East Lansing MI, Arlington Heights, IL, and for 30 years in Sudbury, MA. He taught economics at Ohio University, worked as a tax specialist for the state of Michigan, an economist for Standard Oil in Chicago, and spent 30 years at Cahners/Reed Elsevier Publishing in West Newton and Waltham, MA, retiring as Chief Economist for Reed Construction Data in 2011 to spend winters in Florida and summers in Maine.

He was a fierce ice hockey player in high school and college, a Sunday School teacher in the Episcopal Church, and was active on the town finance committee in Sudbury as well as planning committees at the Southbay Yacht and Racket Club in Osprey. Jim had a great love of sailing, was an avid reader of historical fiction and espionage thrillers, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Cliff Haughey, Jr., his sister Jean Jewett, and his son Brian. He is survived by his wife Barbara of Osprey, FL, daughter Laura and her husband William Fisher of Ore, France, and sisters Sheila Haughey of Charlottesville, VA and Elizabeth Kisthart of Hopatcong, NJ.
