In 1965 Jim Herbstreit played a very positive role in my youth. I was a troubled confused young 15 yo. in N. Columbus, O. in 1965 when he chose myself and my 2 best sandlot friends Steve Morehouse and John Noon to play on the "Hawks" a junior football team for 150 lb and under young men in a league/field in the woodward/forest park area of Cols. O. He never shamed or scolded me for my antics off the field but voiced concern and gave support I was lacking from other adults or peers. I recall sitting on basement steps in his home located by the field in the Forest Park development located off of Karl Rd between Morse Rd, and Granville Rd.-161 highway with He and my team mates before games and how gracious and kind his spouse was. I played offence in backfield as wing-back and defensive tight end and we took the trophy that year as the the undefeated champions who were only scored on in one game. He was a good and a caring person and it was an honor to be coached by him. Pat Adkins

Dear Kirk,
I was deeply saddened to hear of your father's passing. With the passage of time, I trust that the acute pain from which you and your family now suffer, will in someway be lessened.
With Sincere Condolences,

Deepest sympathy to all the Herbstreit family! Jim was a great Buckeye role model by those of us that stepped on the field after him! He helped recruit me any many of my teammates!
He will be remembered by all of us!
The best to Jim's family going forward!

To Louise, Teri, Kirk and family,
So sorry to learn of Jim's passing. He was a dear friend of my late husband and myself from OSU football days and in Dayton with Cole-Layer-Trumble Company. Herbie was a special, caring guy that will be dearly missed by all of us involved with the 1961 OSU team.
Deepest sympathy,
Linda Mrukowski (Bill)
See you on the road

My condolences to Coach Jim Herbstreit's family and friends. Coach Herbstreit made the transition from high school football to college football at the University of Akron (1968-69)more palatable. His high level of energy and dedication was contagious. He was a great coach and mentor. R.I.P.

Jim was such a wonderful, humble person who was very supportive of the Centerville football team and of course, The Ohio State University, and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Herbstreit family at this most difficult time.

A great competitor, friend off the field, and foe on the field. Had a heart of a lion. He was thought highly of by all Lockland Panthers,1955-1957. Fellow Buckeye, 1957-1960. One of a kind. He will be missed. Prayers to the Herbstreit family.

My condolences go out to all of Jim's family & friends. As an avid fan of Ohio State football while growing up back up in the early 50's, I'll always remember Jim playing for Woody Hayes. R.I.P. Jimmie!
