James Higgins Obituary

James "Jim" Higgins, Sr., a native New Orleanian with an infectious and irresistible zest for life, passed away on November 11, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. He was 80 years of age. He was born in old Algiers where he attended Holy Name of Mary and Behrman elementary. He graduated from Jesuit High School in 1957, having served as student council president, a member of the 1953 state championship football team, and the proud and deserving recipient of the Henry McInery award for leadership. Upon graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the reserves until his honorable discharge as a Lance Corporal. He graduated from Spring Hill College in 1961 and was a member of Phi-O fraternity. For 20 plus years after college, Jim owned and operated multiple LeHigs Uniforms stores along with his brothers and parents. Later in life he worked in the administration department at Delgado Community College, supported business development for the City of New Orleans, and worked for World Ship Supply with his good friend, "the Chief" where many an adventure was had. Jim's favorite pastimes included membership on the Sugar Bowl Committee where he was elected its President in 1986. Jim's most cherished memories involved time with his family. From countless family vacations and multiple team photos being taken to coaching his children's teams at Carrollton Boosters and winning many championships there alongside his co-coach and best friend, David Griener. Big Jim preached teamwork and was known for his fiery pep talks, intensity on the field, and companionship after the game. Big Jim loved all holidays, especially Christmas, and was the renowned host of an epic annual Christmas Eve party, which left a generation of guests with unforgettable memories of holiday cheer. Often heard preaching moderation to others, Jim was never quite able to achieve that goal for himself, as his undeniable passion for life always won the day. He was always however filled with song and, as the proprietor of Big Jim's Bar, quick to share a sip of cinnamon schnapps with all comers. At the end of his spirted time on this earth, Jim was surrounded by his family, the "first string" and his wife of 52 years - "his dearest Jeanney" - Jeanne Prados Higgins. Even as his memory declined in later years, he never forgot his intense love for her, and Jeanne was by his side until the end. Big Jim was a great father to each of his children and countless other family friends, and he will be dearly missed by all. He was a man that was known for his laughter, his leadership and his love and that legacy will last forever. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, his five children, James "Beau" Higgins, Jr. (Elizabeth), Heather Higgins Werth (Adam), Hunter Higgins (Erin), Hudson Higgins (Alyssa), Holly "Cakes" Higgins Harrington (Andy) and nine grandchildren. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service at the Immaculate Conception Church, 130 Baronne Street, on Thursday, November 15 at 3 p.m. The family will visit with friends and relatives from 12:30 p.m. until commencement of the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Jesuit High School, 4133 Banks Street, New Orleans, LA 70119, http://www.jesuitnola.org/ Special thanks to his caretakers at the JCC as well as his support staff at home, Jane' and his sidekick and running partner, Jonathan Drury.

I'll always remember Mr. Higgins as my history teacher and football coach at St. Andrew the Apostle Elementary in Algiers in the 1960s. Very few male teachers for 7/8th grade, and Mr. Higgins was an exceptional educator and role model. Imparted virtue, wisdom, respect and class. A favorite of all students. Farewell, Mr. Higgins!

What an incredible man! Jim was always so enthusiastic, positive, and fun-loving. I remember so many fond moments at Carrollton Baseball with Jim and David Griener. He used to call a lot of us "Brother" as a term of endearment.RIP, Jim!

RIP, Coach and Mr Higgins, as he was known to us 7th graders at St Andrew the Apostle School in the mid 60's. He was a beloved history teacher who always made it fun in class. He enjoyed calling all the boys Mr. with their last name which made us feel like big shots.Every time I ran into him at the Jesuit functions it would be Mr Frick, how are you? I cherish those memories and life lessons learned from him.My prayers and thoughts go out to his family.

Jeanne, you know how much I and my entire family loved Jim. My sister still laughs when we recall his Birmingham days, living with my mom, of all people. Let us remember the good times. I know it's been tough on you and the family, but keep the faith. I hear his laugh as I write this.

Love to you, and my best to all the "kids."
