Wow, this fine gentleman adopted each and everyone of his at his Hill's store during the early eighties. Jim's real kids were the same age as us so there was another fun dimension too. Nancy, Brian, Ross, and the perpetual bride, Katie - thanks for sharing your dad/husband with his minions:)- who have almost-all become Facebook friends due to the integrity and charm of Jim. Lovely, wonderful and engaging human being - and he never could have existed without Katie's lunches, delivered every day to the store. Appreciate the role model for true love as well.

My condolences to ALL of the awesome Hill Family. I was extremely fortunate to be a consumer and a supplier to Hill's Dept. Store. In the mid 1960's Hill's was THE first the only west-side store to carry Levis and (of course) all the boys HAD to have their Levis jeans. Add to that the what-seemed-like-weekly trips to Hill's with my four Magee High School teen daughters and one teen son. The Anderson kid's rarely shopped anywhere else...(well maybe the odd trek to Aritzia Oakridge:)
In Septemeber 1971, when I started my 40 year career in my father's agency business(Ernie Anderson Ltd.), we were a major supplier to their childrens wear department. I absolutely considered Jim a mentor and sat many morning's in that "back office" as he drilled into me "margin, margin, margin"...
Much love to Katie, Brian, Ross, and Nancy...your husband/dad was a very special man.

I was deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Hill's passing. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Hill, Brian, Ross, and Nancy. I remember Mr. Hill fondly. I can still see him sitting in the office with the big glass window at Hill's. What a great man he was, and a wonderful light in everyone's lives.

For many, many years my late husband (Al) spoke fondly of the Hill family and was delighted to have attended Jim and Katie's wedding and then 50 years later attended their golden wedding anniversary. Al so admired Jim and Katie for the respect they extended to all. He will be remembered. Warmest condolences to the family.

Like so many others, the Hill family took me under their wing without knowing anything about me. They made a huge difference in my life and I will forever be indebted for their kindness. I'll always remember Jim's jovial laugh and mischievous grin. At the store, Jim tried to project a persona of being tough, but we all knew he was really a big softy with a kind heart. Jim was truly a great man. My deepest condolences to Katie, Brian, Ross and Nancy for their loss.

Jim Hill was indeed a gracious soul, one of the kindest gentlemen I have met in many years. Jim, Katie and their family were always so kind to so many Queen's people for so many years. On behalf of Queen's University, sincerest sympathies from so many.

Rarly in life do we encounter people who make such a difference and impact.Mr Hill was so many things to me. He was a mentor who took me under his wing when I was 18. He supported me through nursing school and gave me a beautiful watch (that I still have to this day) as a gradution gift in 1984.I'll never forget the love and support of both him and Katie. The entire family lovingly called me LaRue.Jim always encouraged me to go after all my dreams and never settle for less. I felt privledged to have him give the toast to the bride at my wedding. I love the entire Hill family. Thank you for sharing your husband and dad with me.

Hills was and still is an institution. I would imagine his proudest acheivement was the wisdom and grace of his children. I am fortunate to have met him and mentioned that I went to school with Ross and he was so generous with his time even though I was just a casual intrusion.

Although it's been many years since I last saw the family. I have very fond memories of Mr. Hill (Katie and family) from my first career after college at Marlin Travel just steps down the road. I remember sending Jim and the family on many holidays over the years. Growing up in a neighbourhood with such iconic family stores holds many a wonderful memory. A true gentleman that will be missed.

Almost 40 years ago, mid September, 1974, when this wonderful, caring man began his everlasting affect on my life. I had just started with LEVI'S and was introduced to "THE" Hills by Rick Griffiths. The beginning of an endearing friendship. Our thoughts and love are with all of the Hill family.

For 40 years, I called him James and he called me Ricardo. I have so many wonderful memories: he had an inquisitive mind and could talk on a great variety of subjects, he loved to learn, particularly from young people, many many Friday nights at Umberto's and always supportive of me. A retailor's retailor.
My apologies to Katie and the kids for not being at the memorial on Friday as I am currently in Croatia.

I too was lucky enough to know "Mr. Hill" as a kid growing up in the neighbourhood, best store ever. Later in the clothing industry he was an inspiration and mentor to me. So sorry for your loss but your memories are amazing.

Jim and I had an interesting way of greeting one another- he'd say "oh no, there's another lawyer here!" to which I'd respond, "I'm sorry Jim, we've been attending your parties since Elizabeth the first" whereupon we'd laugh

My sincerest and heartfelt condolences to the Hill family. I remember very fondly my sojourns at the “Hill Hilton” and the fantastic relationship that Jim and Katie had with their children's friends. I was always felt welcomed and enjoyed the ubiquitous friendly banter. Jim was a warm gregarious man who was a positive role model. I try to emulate his approach with my children- with humour, interest and generosity. Jim somehow always kept abreast of his children's friends progress through life and he always had nothing but encouragement and positive things to say to me in our all too few chats. To my dear friend Nancy I can only imagine the sorrow of your loss but take some solace in the profound love your dad had for you, how immensely proud he was of you and the positive influence he had on so many. Thank you for bringing such a wonderful person into my life however briefly. I will remember him very fondly. Take care and all my love.
