James and Carol Hughes

After 64 years of marriage, James "Jim" Harold Hughes and Edith "Carol" Hughes passed away peacefully, within hours of each other, on the 3rd day of March, 2018, at their home in Colorado Springs, Colorado surrounded by their loving family.
Jim was born in Kirby, Wyoming on January 12, 1933, the fourth of seven children, to Harold and Lillian Hughes and raised in the coal mining town of Gebo. Carol was born on October 2, 1934 to Richard and Lillian "Irene" Clark and raised in New Castle, Pennsylvania, the oldest of three. She graduated from New Castle High School. Carol and Jim met in Boston in 1953 while they were both serving their country during the Korean Conflict. Jim was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps, where he served at sea on the USS Baltimore. Carol proudly served in the United States Navy WAVES. They married on December 21, 1953.
Carol and Jim lived in New Castle, Pennsylvania for ten years where they started their family and Jim attended Slippery Rock State Teachers College. They moved to Colorado Springs in 1963 where Jim took a position teaching math at Palmer High School. In addition to caring for her home and family, Carol dedicated herself to her work as a library clerk at Centennial Elementary School. They both retired in 1995. They were members of the Presbyterian Church.
Jim and Carol were the loving parents of three sons, David (Brenda), John, Jim (Donna), a daughter Connie, and six grandchildren, Morgan Kennedy (Matthew), Audra Martin (Corey), Nathan Hughes, Nicholas Hughes, Kyle Hughes, Lindsey (John) Williams, and Brittany (Robert) Bryant. There are ten great grandchildren, and one on the way. They were preceded in death by Carol's parents, Jim's parents, his sisters Irene and Fae, Jim's brother Frank, their son John and grandson Nathan.
Jim and Carol have been inseparable for over six decades, and even death couldn't keep them apart. Their love story continues, as they left this world on the same day, just hours apart. They will be missed.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 East Fountain Boulevard in Colorado Springs. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol and Jim's honor may be directed to Harrison School District Foundation, Inc. through Evergreen Funeral Home. To the children and grandchildren of Carol and Jim,
We send our deepest sympathies. We both count knowing your parents as a gift and privilege. Your Dad and I (Dave Reinke) both started teaching at Palmer High School the same year. We worked together along with fellow teachers to organize the first of what was then known as CSTA. And your Mom and I (Roxanne) became fast friends when I was referred to her by the Harrison Adm. to select and identify teacher mentors for the teacher aide program at Pikes Peak Comm. She went on to help me again as an ever faithful supporter when I ran for national office with the NEA. The four of us reconnected over a private dinner in 2014. Laughter and self deprecating jokes dominated the few hours we had together. It was a special time we will long hold in our hearts and memory. We cherish the beautiful stained glass art piece that your Dad presented to us as a gift. Little did we know we would not be seeing them again. All our love to each of you at this time of such great loss.

Your Mother, who I never could call by her first name due to my upbringing, became my son Brett's mentor when he enrolled in Kindergarten in 1981. She was his mentor throughout elementary and introduced him to the computer. She would send a computer home in the summers and challenge him. One summer it was a game named High Rise, and the two of them found out there was no last level to the game. She came to his high school graduation and graduation party. She was a special person who had an impact on my son and his decision to major in Computer Science in college. Rest in peace. I know she and Jim will find a special fishing hole in heaven just for the two of them!

Jim and Carol, you have been our neighbors since we bought our house in 1994. You were the first people we met. You watched our boys grow up. We always admired you both for how close your family was. We will truly miss you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Knowing Carol and Jim all of these years, the ending of their life's story doesn't surprise us. They touched so many, not only adults, but especially children. If we all lived by their example, what a world this would be. Rest In Peace, dear friends. Bobbie & Norm Brown

Such a wonderful woman that I will always hold close to my heart. You mother was a very warm loving person to me throughout my years at Centennial as a child. Others were quick to judge but, she was quick to listen with understanding without judging. God has gained a a true Angel. My prayers are with your family. Thank You Mrs. Hughes for dealing with me as a troubled youth in the 70's. RIP

Always,

Carol and Jim, you were both so dear to my heart. Words can not express how important you were to my world. Carol, you were my mentor, friend, confidant and "ungrandma" to my son. :) I was honored to be a "Sweetpea" in your garden. Jim, I loved the time we spent going over all your stained glass equipment, projects in progress, finished artworks, and comparing notes whenever I come by. Thank you both for making me feel special. I love you very much. God's blessings to your souls. To your children, my deepest sympathy and prayers.
