JAMES HUGHES Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 2, 2018.
HUGHES JAMES EDWARD

Age 82, passed away at his home at Greenspring in Springfield, Virginia on Thursday, November 29, 2018, after a short illness. His sister, Nancy E. Kingman; nephew, Allen Kingman; niece, Susan Kingman; and nephews, Ken, Keith, and Kevin Roberts, survive Jim. His parents, J. Nelson and Mary E. Hughes; and his sister, Betty Roberts, precede him in death. Jim decided early in his education and in life that he would strive to help children recognize and enjoy their full potential. Among his many professional accomplishments he was instrumental in creating the Early Education and Child Development program at The University of Pittsburgh School of Education, where he was known as Professor Hughes for over 40 years. He holds a Ph.D. in International Education; an M.S. degree in Child Development and Child Care, and a Master's of Divinity. His awards have been numerous throughout his professional career and in his life. Jim believed that mentoring provides understanding and insight that in turn encourages growth and learning, and he put that into practice with many that he came in contact with, the young and the old, near and far. His world travels were extensive and he found himself from the Antarctic to Swaziland, and South Africa, where he purchased food and took it to children at the local school. If you knew Jim you were important to Jim. Jim, Mr., Professor, Dr. Hughes, or Uncle Jimmy lived life fully and afforded all that he knew with respect. Friends are invited to join the family at a celebration of Jim's life on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at 3 p.m., Greenspring Village Church, 7430 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, Virginia. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's honor can be made to The Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning & Children's Media, St. Vincent College, 300 Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA 15650 (fredrogerscenter.org). Fred Rogers and Jim were lifetime friends and shared their love of children and vision to help children grow as confident, competent, caring human beings.

Jim was a man who profoundly impacted my life by igniting the fire of my fascination for the work of Erik Erikson. My upcoming book to be published on the Hassidic reinterpretation of Erikson's work will be dedicated in part to this giant in my life.

Jimmie was one of the most lively members of the youth groups of the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church and an active participant in reunions in years after. He was a good friend and a fine person with a great sense of humor and a dedication to making the world a better place. We will miss him.

We at 6th Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh loved Mr Hughes. He provided child care during services for all of my children now 21-28. He was a very thoughtful and kind man and understood children on many levels. He also made very delicious ice cream which was served at the holiday dinners at church. I feel very very fortunate to have known him. It makes sense that he and Fred were close friends. They had many similarities.

Jim was an important and cherished part of the work and mission of Sixth Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. He affected the lives of so many children in the Sunday school program including my own now adult children. We will miss so much about Jim, his patience, his dedication, his love and understanding of children. And we will miss his wonderful peppermint ice cream at all of our church socials, a sweet expression of the love he shared with all of us.

Jimmie kept our high school youth group at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church close and connected -- long after we'd all graduated & moved on to other parts of the world. Many of us fondly remember a few reunion gatherings in later years - we spent the entire weekend telling stories & laughing! We will miss you, friend - say hi to Jack & Sue for us!

What a special, caring man. He made a difference in the world in his teaching and love for children, and in his closeness to his friends over the years. I'm grateful to have known him.
