JAMES IVERSON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2010.
James R. Iverson was born in Anacortes, Washington on June 30, 1926, to James Nels and Thyra (Kilander) Iverson.

He passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 24, 2010, with his wife, Marilyn, at his side. He lived a very full life, beginning with many childhood adventures in his hometown.

He graduated from Anacortes High School in June, 1944, enlisted in the Army and was discharged in 1946.

Jim enrolled at the University of Washington in 1946, entered the University of Washington Dental School in 1949, and graduated in 1953. As a graduating senior, Dr. Iverson was awarded the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon for dental academic excellence.

He was also a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. After dental school, Dr. Iverson spent four years in postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Washington, DC and Philadelphia, receiving specialized extensive training in anesthesia at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He immediately began practice in 1957 in the Medical Dental Building in downtown Seattle.

He was a member of the American Academy of Oral Pathology, the American College of Dentists, and was a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Surgery. He retired in 1988 after 31 years as a respected and revered Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Dr. Iverson had many interests, and particularly loved the outdoors. He was an avid snow skier, golfer and hunter, and for more than 40 years, he fulfilled his passion for motorcycles, crossing the United States from Seattle to Kitty Hawk, NC, and HOLDfrom Vancouver, Canada, to Mexico. Many of his trips were with the "Molar Rollers," a group of dentists who shared his love of motorcycles. In his later years, his interests turned to boating, spending many years cruising the San Juan Islands and the Canadian Gulf Islands.

Dr. Iverson is survived by his wife of 24 years, Marilyn Iverson, who loved him with her whole heart. He is also survived by his four children: Mark Iverson, Scott (Sue) Iverson, Tina (Arsie) Roy and Tira Hancock. Also surviving him are ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held October 1, 2010, 2:00 PM, at First Lutheran Church, 10207 NE 183rd Street, Bothell, WA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or, at Jim's request, the American Cancer Society.

Marilyn, I am very saddened to hear of your loss. Jim was a great man. I remember your wedding; your braces, which Jim installed; your wallpapered alcove in your garage for Jim's motorcycle; and your happiness with each other. God's Blessings and love to you. Bev Sherman

Marilyn-We are heartbroken at your loss. Pete and I feel so fortunate to have known Jim and "broken bread and beer" with y'all. You two were the yin and yang/two peas in a pod and all things that go together seamlessly. He was a lovely man. Know in your heart how fortunate you both were to have had such a wonderful life together.........
Warmest Regards,
Molly and Pete Chapas

Marilyn - I received your email - back in the 60s I worked for your husband for five years. My name at the time was Jackie Vick. He was a great boss and we had a good working relationship.
I was young at the time, my early 20s. I started as the chairside assistant, then became the receptionist. I was in the office the morning of the BIG Seattle earthquake. I was working there when Kennedy was assassinated. I still remember him leaving the surgery room, going to his office to check with his stockbroker (his routine), then coming back saying the ticker tape said Kennedy was shot. And then things unfolding as they did.
Other memories too. Some funny, some poignant.
As you probably know, his office was on the 14th floor of the Med Dent Bldg. I remember when skiing season was coming, he would start using the stairs to get to the office, eventually working up to walking all the way up, then escalating from that too. He loved skiing.
He always conducted himself as a gentleman, which in my opinion, is part of the reason he was a good boss. I will always remember him with fondness. It sounds like your marriage was a good one for both of you. I'm happy that is the case.

Marilyn, our hearts go out to you and the family at this time of deep sorrow. It is so difficult for those of us left behind. I wish we could have had more time to get to know this fine man, but are grateful you found each other and had such a fulfilling life together. Please accept sincere condolences from Gary and me, our daughters, and of course, Eunice, Lois and their families. Anita and Gary Mitchell (Everett, WA)

In my heart is a special place my grandpa Jim will always have. I have many memories with Grandpa from having sleepovers and watching the velvetine rabbit to Christmas every year and finding the dang pickle on the tree. I always remember running around the house from stair case to stair case and hearing grandpa say “No running in the house" that always made me laugh. We all knew we shouldn't run but if we did it quietly maybe grandpa wouldn't hear us. (of course not) Grandpa I love you and I know you’re in a safe place. Oh and I will have to add he is the one who taught me how to pick my nose :-) I love you gradpa.~Rachel~ (daughter of Tina(Arsie) Roy)
